India’s weightlifting success at the Commonwealth Games 2026 drew praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who congratulated Mirabai Chanu and Rishikanta Singh for their performances. Mirabai clinched her third consecutive CWG gold medal with a dominant showing in the women’s 48kg category.
Rishikanta also impressed by securing a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event with a strong effort. PM Modi took to X to applaud both athletes, hailing Mirabai’s achievement as another milestone in Indian weightlifting and acknowledging her consistency on the big stage.
“The talented Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills at the Commonwealth Games with a stunning performance in the 48 kg category and winning Gold. With back-to-back Commonwealth Games Golds and an overall fourth CWG medal to her name, she remains an inspiration for every Indian. Congratulations to her! Best wishes for the endeavours ahead,” said PM Modi on X.

He also lauded Rishikanta’s performance, praising his determination and personal best effort.
“Very proud of Indian lifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning a Silver Medal and also achieving his personal best. His determination and outstanding performance have brought immense joy to the nation. May he continue to scale greater heights and inspire many young athletes. Best wishes for his future endeavours!” said Modi.

Mirabai Chanu delivered a dominant performance to retain her Commonwealth Games title in the women’s 48kg category, setting new Games and Commonwealth records with a total lift of 190kg (85kg snatch, 105kg clean and jerk).
The win gave India its first gold of the 2026 Games. Despite missing her opening attempts in both lifts, the 31-year-old recovered to finish 22kg ahead of Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong (168kg). With gold secured, Mirabai skipped her final lift.
Earlier, Rishikanta Singh won silver in men’s 60kg, lifting 264kg after two failed clean and jerk attempts at 143kg.
