PM Modi wished Indian contingent at Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, hoping for exceptional performances

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his best wishes to the Indian contingent competing at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026, expressing hope that the athletes will deliver exceptional performances and make the nation proud.
The Commonwealth Games 2026 are being held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, with India fielding a strong contingent of over 120 athletes. Competitors are participating across eight able-bodied sports and five para sports, aiming to build on the country’s rich legacy at the multi-sport event.
“A few days ago, the Commonwealth Games started in Glasgow. Every countryman is continuously extending their best wishes to the Indian contingent. Their wish is that every player and athlete delivers an outstanding performance and wins people’s hearts,” PM Modi said during the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat.
India recorded another encouraging day at the Games on Saturday. Boxer Sachin Siwach advanced to the pre-quarterfinals, while the women’s lawn bowls duo of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh maintained their unbeaten streak, moving closer to a semifinal berth. These performances followed para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze medal, which opened India’s tally.
Athletes also showed promise in gymnastics and other disciplines, although there were setbacks in swimming and wheelchair basketball. With Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu set to begin her campaign, expectations remain high for India to continue its momentum and add to its medal count.
PM Modi also highlighted the ‘Aksharakanduka’ initiative in Kerala. “I learned about a sports initiative in South Chittoor, Ernakulam, Keralam. A school there has a Sanskrit club. Teacher Abhilash is uniquely popularising Sanskrit. This project is called ‘Aksharakanduka’. It thoroughly explains Sanskrit letters by linking them to words used in football,” he added.
