The aircraft of Australian airline Qantas has set a record for covering the longest distance. This commercial aircraft landed in Melbourne, Australia on the morning of Friday 24 July. The plane covered a distance of 17,000 km in 19 hours and 13 minutes. The plane took off from the city of Toulouse in France at 7:33 am local time on Thursday. It touched down in Melbourne after traveling a long distance of 19 hours and 13 minutes. Special fuel system testing: 20,000 liter extra tank Sydney-London and New York routes to start from October 2027 Qantas first announced ‘Project Sunrise’ in 2017 and ordered 12 customized A350-1000ULR aircraft from Airbus in 2022. The first aircraft was to be delivered this year, but now it has been delayed and the first aircraft will be delivered in April 2027. After this, the remaining 11 aircraft will be delivered in the next two and a half years. The first commercial route of Project Sunrise will be Sydney-London. Ticket sales will begin in February and flights will commence from October 2027. The Sydney-New York route is also expected to open in late 2027. Qantas will need 3 aircraft for daily service on each route. When will Melbourne get non-stop flights? Even though the test flight has landed in Melbourne, there is currently no clear timeline on when direct flights from Melbourne to London or New York will start. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson said Melbourne would be discussed only after the Sydney route is launched. The company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Rob Marcolina said that due to the larger size of the market, Sydney has been given priority over Melbourne. Qantas intends to deploy the subsequent aircraft after the first six aircraft on existing routes such as Perth-London and Auckland-New York. This will free up old Boeing 787 aircraft, which can be deployed on new routes like Chicago, Canada, South America or Perth to Athens and Africa. Unique route with North Pole: Distance will be saved by avoiding winds. Qantas Chief Technical Pilot Alex Passerini said that a unique ‘North Polar Flight Path’ will be used for the Sydney-London non-stop flight. About 20% of flights, especially in the Northern Hemisphere winter, will use this route. It may seem long in terms of distance, but due to avoidance of strong winds and less air traffic at certain times of the year, this route actually proves to be the quickest. In this, the aircraft will enter London from the north, passing over the North Pacific, Alaska, Greenland and Iceland. According to Qantas’ planning, the fastest flight from Sydney to London will be 19 hours 25 minutes and the slowest will be 20 hours 55 minutes. Whereas the flight from London to Sydney will be faster between 18 to 20 hours. There will be 12 hours of darkness: special lights and food to prevent jet lag During this journey, passengers will cross 9 to 11 time zones (14 to 16 time zones on the New York route). Due to being in the plane continuously for 21 hours, passengers may have to face problems like lack of sleep, fatigue, jet lag and dehydration. To deal with this, the help of Professor Peter Cistulli of Charles Perkins Center of Sydney University has been taken. He told that eating at the right time and proper use of lighting is very helpful in adjusting the body clock.
