Indigo’s share in the country’s aviation sector has become stronger. In the month of June, IndiGo has achieved its largest ever market share of 66.3%.

According to the latest DGCA data, this rise has come at a time when rival airline Air India has cut its capacity on both domestic and international routes.

To maintain its market lead, IndiGo has also entered into a landmark agreement (MoU) for the purchase of over 1,000 CFM Leap engines for the Airbus fleet.

89.2 lakh passengers traveled by Indigo in June

According to June data, IndiGo transported 89.2 lakh passengers to their destination. Earlier, 99 lakh passengers had traveled by Indigo in May and 89.7 lakh passengers in April.

Indigo continues to remain at number one on the basis of its strong fleet and network.

Tata Group-run Air India’s performance remained weak in June. Air India served 32 lakh passengers in June, which is its lowest figure this year.

Earlier in January, Air India had touched its highest level of 40 lakh passengers this year.

Air India to face loss of more than ₹26,000 crore in financial year 2025

  • Air India recorded a revenue loss of more than ₹26,000 crore in FY 2024-25. After huge losses, the airline has decided to scale down its operations and network rationalization by the end of August.
  • Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial and Transformation Officer of Air India, said that the airline is planning to restart its suspended domestic and international capacity from September.
  • However, due to aircraft availability issues, flight operations to Chicago and Washington are expected to remain suspended for the time being.

Akasa Air also recorded record performance, market share reached 6.4%

Akasa Air also recorded its best ever market share of 6.4% in June. This airline is growing the fastest. Despite the challenges arising from the West Asia conflict, the company is preparing to raise ₹10,000 crore for its operations. Impact of Middle East tension on aviation sector

Indian airlines are facing problems due to geopolitical tensions and ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In March and April, flights on the Middle East route had to be drastically cut.

Gulf countries account for a major share in the total revenue of Indian airlines. More than 90% of the international capacity of Air India Express and SpiceJet is deployed in the Gulf region.

IndiGo orders 1,000+ Leap engines for 510 Airbus aircraft

IndiGo, on its way to becoming a global airline, has signed an MoU with CFM International to procure over 1,000 LEAP-1A engines to power 510 Airbus A320neo family aircraft.

  • Record Deal: This is the largest single order for LEAP engines ever placed by a single airline in the history of CFM International.
  • Help at MRO Facility: Under this agreement, CFM will also help in setting up IndiGo’s upcoming Engine Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility.
  • spare parts: Additionally, a long-term material services agreement is also included which will ensure uninterrupted supply of spare parts.

Indigo and CFM’s partnership has been strong for 10 years

The history of collaboration between IndiGo and CFM International goes back a decade.

  • 2016: IndiGo started using CFM56-5B engines for its Airbus A320ceo fleet.
  • 2019: LEAP-1A engines have been selected for the A320neo and A321neo fleet, expanding the partnership.

More than 10,000 LEAP engines have been delivered to date worldwide. India is the third largest market for CFM. There are five Indian airlines operating more than 400 Leap-powered aircraft and orders for about 2,000 engines are in the pipeline.

What is MRO facility and LEAP engine?

  • MRO: This is the infrastructure of the aviation sector where parts, engines and entire structures of airplanes are regularly inspected, repaired and overhauled. By becoming an MRO in India, airlines do not need to send planes abroad for repairs and save huge costs.
  • Leap Engine: It is the short form of ‘Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion’. It is manufactured by CFM International (a joint venture between GE and Safran). This engine is known to reduce fuel consumption by 15-20% in modern commercial aircraft and reduce carbon emissions.
