The speedboat captain has been arrested after 15 Indians died when a speedboat filled with Indian tourists capsized in Vietnam on Saturday. A case has been registered against him.
According to media reports, this Indian tourist was a channel partner and employee of ‘Lava Mobile’. All had gone to Vietnam on a reward trip organized for the company’s top performing distributors.
Many victims’ families said that they got their first information about the accident from TV channels or friends’ calls. After this the Indian Embassy and local administration contacted him. Many families are still waiting for the mortal remains of their relatives to reach India.
In the initial investigation, local officials say that this accident happened due to sudden bad weather and high waves. However, investigation into the entire matter is ongoing.

Tourists were trapped under an overturned boat
According to the Indian Embassy, there were a total of 36 people aboard the boat. These included 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members. The boat was going from My Root Island to another island. Then suddenly the weather changed and the boat overturned within a few seconds amid strong waves.
The surviving passengers said that the accident happened so fast that no one got a chance to recover. Those who were sitting in the front of the boat jumped into the sea and came out, but many passengers sitting inside got trapped under the overturned boat and could not get out.
Local sailor Ha Wan Lok said that he saw an overturned boat in the sea with many people clinging to it. Some people were floating in the sea without life jackets. His team pulled the people out by throwing a rope and immediately informed other rescue teams. Later the injured were taken to the shore with the help of jet ski.
In this video of the accident that happened on Saturday, some people are seen sitting on the side of the boat and some are seen sitting on top of the boat.
Survivor said- If treatment had been given on time, more lives could have been saved.
Indian tourist Nirmal Kumar, who survived the accident, said that the local rescue team had arrived quickly, but the nearby island did not have enough medical equipment and essential medicines.
According to Nirmal Kumar, a doctor present with him also said that if necessary medicines and medical facilities were available, the lives of some more people could have been saved. He told that after about two-three hours, Vietnam Air Force arrived and started treatment of the injured.
Another survivor from Andhra Pradesh told PTI that the boat had moved only 300-400 meters from the island. Everyone was taking pictures, when suddenly the boat overturned. “We were all screaming for help, but within moments it was all over,” he said.
After the accident, some people tried to help by giving CPR.
Preparations to bring mortal remains to India soon
Former state president of Tamil Nadu BJP K. Annamalai has expressed grief over the accident. He appealed to the Central and Tamil Nadu governments to immediately bring the bodies of the 10 deceased from Tamil Nadu to the state. Also demanded better treatment of the injured.
The Indian Embassy said that the mortal remains of all the 15 deceased have reached Ho Chi Minh City. There the consular and local administration are completing the necessary legal process. All the mortal remains will be sent to India as soon as the formalities are completed.
The Embassy and Consulate General of India are in constant touch with the Vietnamese administration. The officials have assured to send the dead bodies to India soon and provide all possible help to the affected families. 15 injured are also preparing to return to India after being discharged from the hospital, while one injured is currently undergoing treatment in Phu Quoc hospital.
Impact on tourism services after the accident
Following the accident, several tourism companies have temporarily halted speedboat services between Phu Quoc and surrounding islands. My Rut Island is known for its clear blue waters, white sand and diving. A large number of tourists reach here by speedboat.
Last year, more than 18 lakh foreign tourists visited Phu Quoc. However, many boat accidents have occurred in Vietnam in the past due to bad weather, floods and negligence in boat maintenance.
