PM Modi in Indonesia: BRICS needs Global South sensitivity. India to supply BrahMos, Astra missiles to Indonesia. IIM-Bangalore to open campus in Indonesia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the BRICS platform needs to be more sensitive to the needs of the Global South. From Indonesia, where he has gone for a state visit, the Prime Minister sent a message to the Global South to make BRICS more practical and balanced.
The PM also said that since Indonesia became a full member of this grouping of non-Western countries and India is chairing the group this year, the two can work together to make it more sensitive to the Global South’s needs.
PM Modi was also conferred the “Adipura Star” by the Republic of Indonesia. This is the highest civilian honour that the archipelago nation.
The Prime Minister was awarded this honour for his role in strengthening the ties between Indonesia and India.
Key Outcomes From PM Modi’s Visit
To boost maritime security, India will be supplying BrahMos and Astra missiles to Indonesia, which has historically been a key ally in Southeast Asia. The two countries have also agreed on strengthening their supply chains for critical minerals.
Apart from these, Indonesia and India have signed dozens of key agreements in the fields of technology, food security, medicines, and maritime security.
PM Modi also announced that an overseas campus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore will be opened in Indonesia. This campus will be opened in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone in the East Java region of the country.
This campus will greatly benefit students from Southeast Asia, he said.
This will be the second overseas campus of the one of premier business schools, IIMs, in India. IIM Ahmedabad was the first to open an overseas campus in Dubai.
India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation and Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control signed a Memorandum of Understanding to increase cooperation between the two countries in the health sector, according to a report by PTI.
All That’s Happened So Far
Prime Minister was given a grand red-carpet welcome when he arrived in Jakarta. Addressing the media alongside Indonesian Prime Minister Subianto, PM Modi said that a ‘Golden era beckons both our nations’.
“We share a common culture in our history, shared trust in the present, and shared prosperity in our future. I am confident that, together, we will realise the visions of ‘Indonesia Emas’ [Golden Indonesia] and a developed India,” he said.
The Indonesian Prime Minister then hosted PM Modi at a banquet lunch during which, in a light-hearted moment, the former said that he copies much from the successful career of his Indian counterpart. “I’m happy there is no copyright in following this progress,” he said.
