Indian-origin businessman Gaurav Srivastava, who is facing fraud charges in America, has now been accused of major fraud in Indonesia too. According to reports, he won the trust of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto by posing as an agent of the American intelligence agency CIA and got a fake loan of about Rs 425 crore approved in the name of defense deals. According to reports by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and Indonesian magazine Tempo, Gaurav claimed to have provided 36 fighter aircraft, Black Hawk helicopters and military command systems to the Indonesian Army. For this, he used fake shell companies and got a fake loan of about Rs 425 crore approved in the name of an alleged ‘secret program’ of America. The report claims that this alleged fraud took place between 2020 and 2022. With the money obtained from the fraud, Gaurav also bought a luxurious bungalow worth about Rs 208 crore in Los Angeles. Prabowo used to call Gaurav ‘Mr. G’. According to the report, Gaurav had won so much trust of Prabowo that he used to call him ‘Mr. G’. She also used information about the President’s personal life that was known only to people close to him. These also included the fact that Prabowo considers the spider webs in his house as a part of nature and does not get them cleaned. Gaurav also claimed that he had helped in capturing the terrorists of 2002 Bali bomb blasts and getting Prabowo’s name removed from the US immigration blacklist. Indonesian Defense Ministry spokesman Rico Sirait said the defense deals that had been negotiated had not reached a final agreement. Therefore, the government did not suffer any direct economic loss. According to reports by OCCRP and Indonesian magazine Tempo of five defense deals through shell companies, Gaurav had claimed to have made deals for defense equipment like 36 F-15 fighter aircraft, Black Hawk helicopters and C-130 transport aircraft. Of these, the potential deal for only 36 F-15 fighter planes was worth about Rs 1.32 lakh crore. Investigation revealed that the four companies through which Gaurav obtained these five defense deals were all shell companies. Later these companies were closed due to non-payment of taxes. Many cases including fraud are registered against Gaurav in America since 2024.
