Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Indonesia tour on Monday. During this time he will meet President Prabowo Subianto and will also visit Prambanan Temple, which is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Also, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal worth about ₹2,500 crore is likely to be sealed in the bilateral meeting with President Subianto. Apart from this, issues like defense cooperation, maritime security, trade, investment, digital cooperation and partnership in the Indo-Pacific region are also expected to be discussed. Both the leaders can also sign many bilateral agreements. Cooperation between the two countries in defence, trade, connectivity and maritime security has steadily increased over the years. The purpose of this visit is believed to be to give new impetus to the strategic partnership. This is Modi’s third visit to Indonesia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Indonesia twice before. The first visit took place in May 2018. During this, both the countries gave the status of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to the relationship. More than 15 agreements were agreed upon, including defence, maritime security, anti-terrorism cooperation, trade, digital economy, science-technology and connectivity. In this visit, both the countries also emphasized on taking forward the common maritime vision. After this, Modi reached Indonesia to attend the 20th ASEAN-India and 18th East Asia Summit held in Jakarta in September 2023. Indonesia can become the second country to buy BrahMos from India. The possible deal between India and Indonesia for BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system worth about ₹ 2,500 crore is considered to be the most important agenda of this visit. If the agreement is ratified, Indonesia could become the second foreign customer after the Philippines to buy BrahMos missile. The deal will boost India’s defense exports and also strengthen Indonesia’s coastal and maritime security capabilities. BrahMos missile has been developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture of India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia. It is counted among the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles. Sabang Port of Indonesia is important for India. Sabang Port of Indonesia is located very close to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is considered strategically important due to its location near the entrance to the Strait of Malacca. A large part of the world’s sea trade passes through this route. India and Indonesia had agreed to enhance maritime cooperation in and around Sabang Port during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Jakarta in 2018. Under this, emphasis was laid on port development, maritime connectivity, logistics cooperation and strengthening maritime security. Sabang Port has the capacity to provide fuel, repair and logistics support to Indian naval ships. This can strengthen India’s maritime reach and surveillance capability in the Indian Ocean region. Prambanan Temple, located in Central Java province, about 400 km from the capital Jakarta, is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. It is also considered an important symbol of the shared cultural ties between India and Indonesia. There are a total of 240 temples in the Prambanan complex. The tallest and most prominent temple among these is dedicated to Lord Shiva, whose height is about 47 meters (154 feet). Indonesia is the country with the highest Muslim population in the world, but the deep imprint of Hindu-Buddhist civilization is still visible on its cultural heritage. Prambanan Temple is considered a major symbol of that shared heritage.
