A 21-year-old British woman has been arrested in Thailand after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend, according to local media reports.
The Bangkok Post reported that on Thursday morning local time, police discovered the body of a 34-year-old man, who ran a cannabis farm, inside a luxury rental home in the Pattaya area, a beachside region about two hours from Bangkok known for its expat population and nightlife.
Officers said the victim was found in a bathroom attached to a bedroom with multiple stab wounds. He is believed to have been dead for around six hours before police arrived, the Guardian reported.
The woman, identified as his girlfriend, was found sitting near the body. Investigators told the Bangkok Post that a 50cm machete-like knife had been washed clean in a sink. While she claimed her partner had injured himself, police said inconsistencies emerged in her account.
She reportedly claimed that the couple had gone out to choose engagement rings and later smoked cannabis together, after which she said she could not remember what happened.
Meanwhile, a friend of the victim who discovered the body alerted the police. He reportedly told investigators that he had been informed about a possible problem by a business partner in the United States. The friend then filmed a video of the house when he went to check the situation before notifying the police.
According to the report, the victim’s body also appeared to have been moved, with bloodstains and signs of a struggle found across different parts of the house.
Images aired by Pattaya Cable TV showed police at the property, with the young woman, described as having red hair, sitting on a couch in a large room with purple curtains. In another clip, she was seen being questioned by officers outside the residence.
Thailand, which became the first country in Asia to legalise cannabis in 2022, saw a rapid rise in marijuana businesses following the move. Although recreational use was restricted last year, cannabis remains widely available.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the families of two British nationals in Thailand and are in contact with the local authorities.”
