“Who are these?” On hearing Salman Khan’s question, the answer came – “Darling…, go and ask your father, who are we?” This was the prince. Those actors who used to increase their fees even after a flop film. He used to say- ‘Whether my picture works or not, I have not failed. Sometimes Bappi would openly make fun of Lahiri for wearing jewellery, and sometimes he would cut the shirts of artists like Govinda and make them handkerchiefs. His frankness and quick wit were such that even big artists used to shy away from speaking in front of him. And his talent and awe were such that even superstars like Rajinikanth were hesitant to do films with him at one time. ‘We will kill you and will definitely kill you, but that gun will also be ours, the bullet will also be ours and the time will also be ours…’ (Film – Saudagar, 1991) ‘We will give you that death, which has neither been written in any law book nor ever thought of by any criminal…’ (Film – Tiranga, 1992) These dialogues of Rajkumar were also written keeping in mind his powerful personality and heavy voice. But the voice of regret which ruled millions of hearts, became a canker in the last days. He died in 1996 due to throat cancer. The prince believed that death was a personal matter, which is why he expressed his last wish to keep his illness and death a secret. Today it has been 30 years since Rajkumar passed away. On the occasion of his death anniversary, read the stories of his outspoken, powerful personality which help in understanding his personality – Story-1: In the party, Amitabh Bachchan’s suit was compared with the screen. Rajkumar was at the peak of his career in the 60s. His loudness was discussed more than his acting was praised. Everyone was shy about doing anything in front of him. There was a time when Amitabh Bachchan was a newcomer to films. Both of them met in a party. Amitabh wore a foreign three-piece suit in the party. Rajkumar came near and asked from where he got the suit stitched. Amitabh felt that he was praising, so he immediately wanted to tell the address, but Rajkumar looked at the suit from top to bottom and said – I also want to get the curtains stitched. Amitabh Bachchan could not say anything on this insult and walked away smiling. Story – 2 Govinda made a handkerchief by cutting the shirt given to him as a gift. Govinda had worked with Rajkumar in the 1989 film Jangbaaz at the beginning of his career. One day on the set, Rajkumar saw Govinda and said – Your shirt is very nice. Govinda became very happy to receive praise from a big star like Rajkumar. He quickly said – Sir, if you like this shirt, then keep it. Govinda immediately took off the shirt and gave it to Rajkumar. It was a big thing for a new actor like Govinda that he gifted a shirt to Rajkumar and Rajkumar would never wear the shirt given by him. Two days later, Govinda was heartbroken when Rajkumar cut the shirt given to him and made it into a handkerchief. Director Mehul Kumar narrated this story in an interview. Story – 3 Seeing Mithun Chakraborty, he asked the producer – Which struggling actor did you bring? Mithun Chakraborty had got a small role in the film Goliyon Ki Badshah in the 80s with the star Rajkumar of that era. Rajkumar’s attitude was not good with new actors at that time. On the very first day of shooting, when Mithun got ready wearing the costume, seeing him, Rajkumar said to the director – I agree that the role is small, but why did you bring a struggling actor for it. Had to hire a good actor, who should he pick? Mithun felt very bad about this. He went straight to Rajkumar and said – The struggling actor you are talking about is me. Seeing Mithun, Rajkumar laughed and said – Why did you come here to act? This is not a child’s play. On this Mithun said- I know this is not a child’s play. I have been acting for 7 years. One day I will also become a big actor. Hearing this, the prince laughed again and said – If you want any small role, then let me know. Story – 4 Seeing Bappi Lahiri’s jewellery, he said – Would have worn Mangalsutra as well. Legendary singer Bappi Lahiri was also famous for wearing heavy gold jewellery. One day at a party Rajkumar’s eyes fell on Bappi Da. When Bappi went closer to meet him, the prince looked up and down and said – “Wow, wonderful!” You are wearing many ornaments, only Mangalsutra is missing, you could have worn that too. Story – 5 When Salman could not recognize, he said – Ask your father who we are. In 1989, Salman Khan’s film Maine Pyar Kiya was a superhit. Producer Sooraj Barjatya threw a party, where Rajkumar also attended. This was a matter of pride for Barjatya. He immediately took Salman Khan to meet Rajkumar, but in the joy of success, Salman could not recognize him. Salman gave a cold reaction and then in hushed words asked Sooraj Barjatya – who is he? The prince overheard this and replied, “Go home and ask your father who we are, then you will know.” On hearing this, Sooraj Barjatya, standing nearby, took Salman aside and told him about the prince. Salman immediately realized his mistake and came to Rajkumar again and apologized. Story – 6 When the comedian got more dialogues, Rajkumar got angry, he spoke all the dialogues himself. Rajkumar got the role of a kind-hearted person in the film Maryada, released in 1971. It was to be shown in the film that he gave money for the treatment of the servant’s mother and the mother got cured. The role of the servant was given to comedian Mohan Choti. According to the scene, Mohan Choti had to say, Master, you had given me money for mother’s treatment, mother has completely recovered. How will I return this favor of yours? Master, can I heat water for your bath? Rehearsal started on the set. As soon as Mohan Choti said this dialogue, Rajkumar got angry and said – Now our days have come when this Mohan Choti will speak and we will listen. After some time, as soon as the action was called, even before Mohan Choti could utter the dialogue, Rajkumar himself changed the entire dialogue and said, Mohan, come here, we had given money for your mother’s treatment, I have heard that your mother has completely recovered. Hey brother, there is no need to accept a favor, it was our duty. Now what are you looking at while standing, go and heat water for my bath. Story – 7 Refused to eat at Sadhna’s house, said – eat food, but don’t eat anything. Rajkumar worked in the film Ulfat in the 70s, in which his co-stars were Waheeda Rehman and Sadhna. One day after finishing the shooting, Sadhna invited Rajkumar and other actors for dinner. The prince arrived and the food came out. Everyone was eating food, but the prince was sitting silent. Sadhna told him- Raj Saheb, eat food. The prince said- No, you eat. Sadhna again said- eat something. Eat just a little. The prince again said- No, you all eat. Sadhna said hesitantly – You must be eating food. On this, Rajkumar said in his own style – Jaani…, we eat food, but it does not mean that we should eat anything anywhere. Story – 8 The man who teased a girl was beaten so much that he died. Rajkumar was born on 8 October 1926 in Baluchistan, British India. His real name was Kulbhushan Pandit. In 1940, Rajkumar was appointed as Sub Inspector in Bombay Police. Seeing her height and fair complexion, friends often suggested her to go into films. At the same time, Raj Kapoor offered him the film Awara, which Rajkumar rejected. One day on his holiday, Rajkumar was strolling in Juhu with a friend and his girlfriend. Then some stray boys teased the friend’s girlfriend. The prince became enraged by this and beat a boy so badly that he died on the spot. Rajkumar was accused of murder. Raza Murad’s father was a friend of the prince, so he often accompanied him to every hearing. After a long time, Rajkumar was acquitted from the case. After some time, on the insistence of a friend, Rajkumar got a photoshoot done, thanks to which he got the 1952 film Rangeeli. This film did not do well, but Rajkumar started getting films continuously. Rajkumar got recognition from the 1957 film Mother India and further films like Waqt, Unche Log, Humraaj, Neel Kamal Heer Ranjha made him a star. Story – 9 On rejecting the film, Raj Kapoor publicly said – Killer, the answer was to stop speaking. With time, Raj Kumar started getting bigger films, but years ago, Raj Kapoor was always irritated by the rejection of Awara. Despite being two important personalities of the same industry, both of them never talked. Years later, both of them came face to face at Prem Chopra’s wedding party. Raj Kapoor remembered his old wounds. At the party, Raj Kapoor drank a lot of alcohol and while intoxicated, he started abusing Rajkumar. The argument escalated so much that Raj Kapoor shouted at Raj Kumar – You are a murderer. Rajkumar replied, ‘Of course I am a murderer, but I did not come to you asking for work, rather you came to me with a film offer.’ Story – 10 When Dilip Kumar slapped, it was not a matter of 33 years. Just one year after this film, his film Paigam was released, in which he played the role of Dilip Kumar’s elder brother. Dilip Kumar had to slap him for a scene. On hearing the action, Dilip Kumar slapped Rajkumar’s cheek with full force, which hit him hard. Rajkumar, in front of whom people used to shy away from even speaking, was shaken as soon as he was slapped. He assumed that Dilip Kumar did this deliberately and ended his friendship with Dilip Kumar. There was no communication between both of them for 33 years. Both of them gave tough competition to each other in the industry. After 33 years, Subhash Ghai got the two reconciled. Actually, when Subhash Ghai wrote the script of the film Saudagar according to Dilip Kumar and Rajkumar. When Dilip Kumar was called for the film, he liked the story. But keeping the condition of doing the film, he had told Subhash Ghai – You will have to take the responsibility of taking care of Rajkumar during the shooting. Then when Subhash narrated this story to the prince. When he came to know that Dilip Kumar is a part of this film, he was very happy. He also said – Dear, I consider anyone a better actor after me in this industry, then it is only Dilip Kumar. Story – 11 Firoz Khan said – Don’t teach me, the next day he said – kept his arrogance intact. Firoz Khan had worked with Rajkumar in the 1965 film Unche Log. At that time Firoz was new to the industry. On the first day of shooting, Rajkumar went to him and said – Look, this is your first film. To do the film with utmost perfection. However, I will keep teaching you from time to time. He had not even finished speaking when Firoz Khan said – Don’t teach me. I will do my work well. The people present on the set were scared that Rajkumar might leave the film. However, this did not happen. The next day the prince himself went to Firoz Khan and said – This arrogance of yours is good, always maintain it. Story – 12 Rajnikanth and Naseeruddin Shah refused to work together. Due to Rajkumar’s powerful personality, many big actors were hesitant to work with him. This was the reason that when Rajinikanth got the film Tiranga with Rajkumar, he called director Mehul Kumar and said, Mehul ji, I have only one problem – how will I be able to work with Raj Saheb. What will I do if there is tension on some sets? Pardon me.’ When Mehul Kumar offered the film to Naseeruddin Shah, he got the reply – Mehul Bhai, I have no problem with you. But I could not work with Raj Saheb. Ultimately this film was given to Nana Patekar. Nana Patekar put a condition for doing the film – Raj Saheb will interfere on the set, then I will leave the set. One day Rajkumar called Mehul Kumar and asked – Who is doing this film? Got the answer – Nana Patekar. On this the prince said- ‘Hey Mehul! His mind is very bad. Heard that he abuses on the set. On this casting, every person from the film industry said that Mehul Kumar will never be able to complete this film, because both the actors are short-tempered. But both of them coordinated very well on the set and the film was ready in 6 months. Story: Said to Zeenat Aman, who has become a star 13- Why doesn’t Rajkumar work in films? Apart from outspokenness, he was also famous for his humor. Zeenat Aman had become a star in the 70s by doing excellent films like Hare Rama Hare Krishna. One day he met the prince. Rajkumar approached her and said, Zeenat, you are very beautiful. Why don’t you try working in films? On hearing this, the people present there laughed. Story – 14 When Dharmendra grabbed the collar, he left the film incomplete and left the set. On the first day of the shooting of the film Kajal, Rajkumar looked at Dharmendra and said – Dear, a hero was needed for the shooting of the film, not a wrestler. Dharmendra got very angry after hearing this, but he very politely asked him not to make fun of him. Still, when Rajkumar did not agree, Dharmendra caught hold of his collar. Seeing this, everyone present on the set was surprised. Later this film was completed without Rajkumar. Story – 15 When the pet dog did not respond, he said to Ramanand Sagar – How should I play the role if the dog does not agree? In 1968, Ramanand Sagar was making the film Aankhen. He reached Rajkumar with the script. The prince was not in a good mood that day. He called his pet dog near him and asked – Will you work in this film? कुत्ता शांत खड़ा रहा। इस पर राजकुमार ने रामानंद सागर से कहा- जब मेरा कुत्ता भी इस रोल के लिए तैयार नहीं है, तो मैं भला इसे कैसे कर सकता हूं। रामानंद सागर नाराज होकर वहां से निकल गए और फिर धर्मेंद्र को कास्ट कर लिया।
