Ronald Koeman has stepped down as Netherlands head coach following the Dutch side’s shock FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 elimination to Morocco, bringing an end to his second spell in charge of the national team.
The 63-year-old announced his decision in an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday, a day after the Netherlands suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat in Monterrey. The Dutch had taken the lead in the 72nd minute but conceded a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser before losing 3-2 on penalties, crashing out before the Round of 16 for the first time in 12 World Cup appearances.
“Last night, I made the decision to end my tenure as head coach of the Dutch national team,” Koeman wrote. “We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would make history. That didn’t happen. No one is more disappointed about that than I am. As head coach, you bear that responsibility.”
Koeman also reflected on a managerial career that included spells at clubs such as Ajax, PSV, Valencia, Southampton, Everton and Barcelona, along with two stints in charge of the Netherlands. He said he felt “proud and grateful” for the opportunities he had received but admitted the manner of his departure from the national team was painful.
The Dutch entered the tournament ranked eighth in the FIFA rankings and topped Group F with victories over Sweden and Tunisia, alongside a draw with Japan. Despite Morocco being ranked one place higher, the Netherlands were widely expected to progress to the last 16 before their dramatic exit.
Koeman’s resignation followed mounting criticism over the team’s performances throughout the tournament. Dutch media questioned the side’s inconsistent displays, accusing them of sluggish build-up play and a lack of intensity despite securing top spot in the group.
He also hinted that his coaching career may be nearing its end, revealing that his wife’s health battle had altered his perspective on life.
“Football has been my life, but health is priceless,” Koeman wrote, thanking his wife, Bartina, for encouraging him to continue despite her illness.
Dutch football association technical director Nigel de Jong acknowledged the campaign had fallen well below expectations.
“The objective was the semi-finals, and the ambition was to become world champions,” De Jong said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t achieve that. We have to be honest about that.”
Koeman first took charge of the Netherlands in 2018 before leaving in 2020 to coach Barcelona. He returned in 2023 after the departure of Louis van Gaal but ultimately failed to deliver the success expected during his second spell.
