The UAE has suspended the deal to buy 80 Rafale fighter jets from France. According to a report by Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the UAE took this decision on Wednesday, August 28, after the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov in France.
In 2021, the UAE signed a deal with French aerospace company Dassault to buy 80 fighter jets. Their delivery was to take place by 2027. According to the report, now the UAE is considering ending all types of military and technical cooperation with France due to Durov’s arrest.
Actually, Telegram CEO Durov was born in Russia. After founding the social media company Telegram, Durov lived in many countries. He established the headquarters of Telegram in Dubai in 2017. During this time he got UAE citizenship. Four years later, in 2021, Pavel Durov also acquired French citizenship.

UAE will provide consular assistance to Durov
The UAE Foreign Ministry has also contacted French authorities to provide consular assistance to Durov. On Tuesday it said, “We are closely monitoring Durov’s case. The safety of our citizens and the protection of their interests is of utmost importance to the UAE.”
Russia said- France-Russia relations are at a low level due to Durov’s arrest
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on August 27, ‘After Durov’s arrest, relations between Russia and France have reached the lowest level. France has made very serious allegations against the CEO of Telegram, which will require equally serious evidence to prove.’
Durov is accused of using Telegram as a medium for exchanging child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking and promoting organized crime. He was arrested on Saturday (August 24) for not sharing information.
According to French law, Durov can be kept in custody for 4 days. After this, the judge will decide the charges against Durov or he will be released.

Russian-born Durov founded Telegram in 2013 with his brother. He is also called the Zuckerberg of Russia. The Russian government was demanding data related to the Russian public from him, due to which he left the country in 2014 and acquired citizenship of St. Kitts and Nevis.
After this, he acquired citizenship of UAE and France. UAE was Durov’s hideout until his arrest.
Rafale fighter jet can attack up to 3700 km

Rafale is one of the most modern fighter planes in the world, capable of carrying many lethal weapons and missiles. Rafale is known for its speed, weapon carrying capacity and attack capability. Its rate of climb is better than the modern fighter planes possessed by China and Pakistan. Rafale is an omni role fighter plane, which can be landed in a very small space on a mountain and can also be landed on a warship sailing in the sea. Another special feature of Rafale is its ability to refuel while flying in the air. Once refueled, it can fly continuously for 10 hours.
