Canada made history by securing their first-ever place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating South Africa 1-0 in the tournament’s opening Round of 32 fixture at Los Angeles Stadium in California, USA, on Sunday. A dramatic stoppage-time strike from Stephen Eustaquio proved decisive, ending Bafana Bafana’s memorable campaign and sending Les Rouges into the knockout stage for the first time.
In another bit of interesting trivia, Canada became the first host nation to play a knockout game outside their country in the win.
With the match seemingly destined for extra time, Eustaquio produced the breakthrough deep into added time, scoring the only goal of the contest to seal Canada’s progression in the quadrennial showpiece.
Jesse Marsch’s side controlled much of the opening exchanges, launching wave after wave of attacks in search of an early lead. However, South Africa’s disciplined defensive unit stood firm, frustrating the Canadians at every turn and ensuring the teams went into the half-time interval deadlocked.
Bafana Bafana continued to defend resolutely throughout the second half, with their goalkeeper delivering an outstanding performance behind a well-organised backline. But just when it appeared they had done enough to force extra time, Eustaquio stepped up with a moment of quality. The midfielder, who had not scored for Canada in nearly 30 months, fired past the diving South African goalkeeper in stoppage time to hand Les Rouges a landmark victory and guide Jesse Marsch’s men into uncharted territory with a place in the Round of 16.
