Two weeks ago, the US and Iran agreed to an interim peace deal. State-run Iranian media has commented that Tehran has no alternative but to build a nuclear weapon.
CNN quoted the commentary, which was not signed, in news agency Fars stating, “To attain the peace of mind it needs, Iran must definitely achieve nuclear deterrence so that it can be assured that the remaining issues will be resolved through negotiation. Only in this case can negotiations be conducted from the proper position.”
“Nuclear deterrence means that you can achieve a balance of power against the United States and Israel, which possess atomic bombs. It does not mean that war will not occur; rather, the scope of the conflict will become controllable,” the commentary said.

This comes even as Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear activities are intended for peaceful purposes and has denied seeking to develop nuclear weapons.
Since the start of the war with Iran, US President Donald Trump had repeatedly warned that stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon was a primary reason for the conflict.
“Iran has no path other than achieving nuclear deterrence, so that the military option for the occupation and partition of Iran is taken off the table,” it said.
Last week, Trump claimed that Iran would have used a nuclear weapon “within the first hour” if it had possessed one, while asserting that Tehran has agreed not to acquire nuclear weapons as part of ongoing negotiations between the two countries.
Tensions in West Asia escalated sharply on Sunday after Kuwait said its air defence systems intercepted incoming “hostile” missiles and drones, while air raid sirens were activated in neighbouring Bahrain following fresh US military strikes on Iran.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that any further US attacks would receive a “crushing response”, while both Washington and Tehran accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement that was intended to end four months of fighting.
US President Donald Trump also issued a fresh warning to Iran, saying, “There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!”
The latest developments came hours after the United States carried out another round of strikes on Iranian targets, following an attack on a commercial tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The renewed military action marks the most serious escalation since Washington and Tehran agreed to an interim peace deal two weeks ago.
