Punjab govt launches 500 gyms across Punjab villages to promote youth fitness

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday inaugurated 500 rural gyms across the state in a major push to promote youth fitness and encourage greater participation in sports.

Launching the initiative at a public meeting in Chandbaja village of Faridkot district, Mann said the gyms would help keep young people healthy and steer them towards sports.

“The government stands shoulder to shoulder with you. Come, let us all together take our state to new heights of progress,” he told the gathering during the inauguration.

Equipped with modern fitness equipment, the gyms aim to provide village youth with access to quality workout facilities closer to home and promote a healthier lifestyle.

The initiative is part of the AAP government’s broader campaign to tackle drug abuse by encouraging sports and youth engagement. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal has promised to establish sports clubs in every village across Punjab as part of this effort.

Addressing youth leaders during a leadership programme last year via video conference, Kejriwal had said the clubs would be equipped with modern sports infrastructure, enabling young people to excel in athletics and other disciplines.

Kejriwal said the clubs would nurture leadership, teamwork, community service, environmental awareness, folk arts and entrepreneurship.

He had reaffirmed the party’s commitment to youth empowerment and drug eradication through a combination of sports, education and rehabilitation. He had also expressed confidence that such initiatives would help transform Punjab into a drug-free and progressive state.
