An explosion followed by gunfire was reported in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi on Saturday night, triggering a major security response near the headquarters of the Pakistan Rangers, a paramilitary force.

According to Pakistani media reports, the blast occurred in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area, close to the offices of the Pakistan Rangers, several universities and the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Police and rescue teams rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the explosion and subsequent firing. Authorities cordoned off the area as security personnel launched an operation to determine the nature of the incident.

The cause of the blast, the number of casualties and the identity of those behind the incident were not immediately known.

Videos circulating on social media showed heavy police deployment around the area, with intermittent gunfire reportedly continuing as security forces secured the neighbourhood. News18 could not independently verify the videos.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the provincial police chief and Karachi’s Additional Inspector General of Police to submit a detailed report on the incident.

Geo News reported that firing continued in the area for some time, prompting authorities to deploy additional police contingents and seal off the neighbourhood.

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and commercial hub, has witnessed several militant attacks over the years by groups including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the explosion or whether it was the result of a militant attack. Investigation is underway.
