Hungarian police have arrested a 30-year-old hospital worker on allegations of cannibalism that he stole human remains from a hospital and abandoned cemeteries, stockpiled them in his apartment, and admitted to consuming some of the body parts.
The suspect, who worked as a patient transporter at a hospital in Budapest, was taken into custody by Hungary’s National Bureau of Investigation on suspicion of the illegal use of human remains. Investigators said they uncovered a grisly collection inside his apartment during a search conducted last week.
According to police, officers recovered what appeared to be a prepared human face, facial skin, a lower leg, a brain, a hand, several skulls, bones packed inside a suitcase, and a heart preserved in a jar. Forensic experts are still examining the heart to determine whether it belonged to a human or an animal.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted that he had a fascination with human body parts and told investigators he had prepared and eaten some of the remains. Police also said the man had a long-standing interest in anatomy and pathology and enjoyed dissecting animals.
Investigators believe the remains may have been stolen from the hospital where the suspect worked as well as from abandoned cemeteries across Hungary and neighbouring Slovakia. Authorities are now trying to determine the origin of the remains and identify the individuals they belonged to.
Police said the suspect had openly discussed his unusual hobby of collecting bones with family and friends and had taken photographs of his collection.
As part of the investigation, officers seized multiple electronic devices, including computers, laptops, mobile phones, SIM cards and storage media, for forensic examination.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be filed depending on the findings regarding how the remains were obtained and whether any graves were illegally disturbed.
