OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India, marking a major step in the ChatGPT maker’s expansion strategy in one of its fastest-growing and most important markets.

Singh, who will join the company in September, becomes OpenAI’s most senior executive in India. He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific (APAC), and oversee the company’s operations across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and business operations in the country.

“OpenAI can confirm that Prabhjeet Singh will join as Managing Director for India in September. He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for APAC (Asia Pacific),” the company said in a statement.

Who Is Prabhjeet Singh?

Before joining OpenAI, Prabhjeet Singh served as President of Uber India and South Asia, where he led the ride-hailing company’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. During his tenure, he played a key role in expanding Uber’s presence, strengthening partnerships, and navigating the region’s complex regulatory landscape.

Singh is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.

What Will He Be Tasked At OpenAI?

As Managing Director for India, Singh will be responsible for driving OpenAI’s growth across both consumer and enterprise segments. His role includes expanding partnerships with businesses, institutions, developers, and government bodies while supporting the country’s broader artificial intelligence ecosystem.

OpenAI said Singh will focus on helping more consumers, enterprises, educational institutions, and public sector organisations adopt AI technologies.

Why India Matters To OpenAI

The appointment comes as OpenAI deepens its investment in India, which has emerged as one of the company’s top-priority markets.

India has become one of the largest and fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, with strong adoption among consumers, startups, enterprises, developers, and educational institutions. The company opened its first office in New Delhi in November 2025 and has been actively building partnerships across the country.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly highlighted India’s rapid AI adoption. During the India AI Summit earlier this year, Altman described India’s progress as “quite amazing,” praising the country’s commitment to investing across the AI infrastructure, model development, and application layers.

Appointment Comes Alongside GPT-5.6 Sol Launch

Singh’s appointment coincides with OpenAI’s announcement of GPT-5.6 Sol, the latest version of its AI model featuring what the company describes as its “most robust safety stack yet.”

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol includes stronger real-time protections against cyber threats, jailbreak attempts, malware generation, and repeated misuse. The company said it spent weeks hardening the model through human red teaming and more than 700,000 A100-equivalent GPU hours of automated testing before release.

The twin announcements underscore OpenAI’s strategy of strengthening its presence in India while continuing to enhance the safety and enterprise readiness of its AI models globally.
