A commuter’s metal chain has been identified as the cause of a disruption that briefly impacted operations on the Purple Line of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro recently, according to a statement issued by authorities.
The incident took place on Thursday, June 25, when the doors of a train failed to close at Cubbon Park Metro Station. The issue was encountered at around 7.36 pm, and was resolved within 17 minutes, per officials.
“Investigations carried out by the Operations and Maintenance teams revealed that a metal chain, belonging to a commuter, had become lodged in the train door guideway, preventing the doors from closing properly and resulting in the operational delay,” the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said in a statement on Friday.
It added, “A detailed examination of the train and its door systems has confirmed that there was no technical malfunction in the train equipment.” Passengers were de-boarded from the train as a precautionary safety measure after the problem was encountered, BMRCL said in an earlier statement.
The incident at the Cubbon Park Metro Station on Thursday was the second such instance of disruption to services on the Purple Line in three days. On Tuesday, June 23, evening, services on the same corridor were disrupted during peak hours due to a technical snag in a train.
That train was also at the Cubbon Park Metro Station when the issue arose. The disruption led to heavy crowding at several metro stations.
Office-goers were heading home, several commuters were stranded and were forced to look for alternative modes of transport, including autos and app-based cabs, to reach their destinations.
Normal operations across the Purple Line only resumed in the early hours of Wednesday. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya took a swipe at the Congress-led Karnataka government over the June 23 disruption, claiming that hardworking professionals in India’s Silicon Valley were forced to hitch rides on trucks just to get home after work due to the incident.
He also posted a purported video showing people climbing onto trucks to apparently reach their destinations. The stretch was heavily congested with vehicles, resulting in traffic snarls and inconvenience to commuters.
“First-world tech talent. Third-world governance. That is the story of Bengaluru,” the BJP parliamentarian said in the post. He alleged that disruptions to metro services have become “alarmingly frequent” in the city.
“Since January 2024, nearly 20 reported technical faults and service disruptions have occurred across the Bengaluru Metro network, with the Purple Line accounting for the highest number of incidents,” he said in a different post.
The June 23 disruption has been widely described as one of the most severe to affect Bengaluru Metro services in recent years.
