The mother of the six-year-old girl, who was murdered after being assaulted and smothered inside a car in Bengaluru, had begun an In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) procedure with her alleged partner.
According to a report by the Times of India, Priyanka P and Mohan MG visited a hospital to donate egg samples as part of the procedure, sources familiar with the matter said.
Police are now investigating whether the couple’s plan to start a new family was linked to the murder of the six-year-old girl.
Priyanka, an advocate accused of killing her daughter in alleged collusion with Mohan, was apprehended on Thursday. She was arrested from a farmhouse in Sakaleshpur, Hassan district, around 220 km from Bengaluru, Times of India reported.
A court has remanded the accused to five days of police custody.
How Incident Came To Light
The case surfaced after Priyanka’s estranged husband, Praveen, lodged a complaint at the Kadugodi police station on June 4, alleging her and her partner’s role in the alleged crime.
While Mohan was arrested soon after, Priyanka was nabbed following a seven-day search.
During interrogation, Mohan allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed he had killed the child by assaulting and smothering her inside a car. Police have now shifted the probe to examining the motive of the crime, assessing if Priyanka’s dissatisfaction with her daughter’s complexion was a factor behind the killing.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh acknowledged the lapses in the initial investigation, asserting an action had been taken against those responsible.
“There were some investigation lapses. We have taken action against those responsible for those lapses. A report has been received regarding the matter, and we have acted based on that report,” he said, as quoted by Times of India.
The case has now been handed over to an ACP-level officer from another division. A further probe remains underway into the matter.
