A powerful earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck near the northwest coast of Cuba on Monday. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was in the ocean about 104 kilometers away from the city of Mantua in western Cuba. Its depth was recorded at about 26 kilometers.
Due to the earthquake, buildings shook in many areas of Cuba and people came out of their homes and offices. Tremors were felt in many cities including the capital Havana.
The impact of the tremors reached Florida, America. People in areas around Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando also reported feeling tremors. Some government offices were evacuated as a precaution.
Tremors were also felt in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. However, there is no news of major damage or loss of life anywhere in Cuba, America and Mexico.
According to experts, such powerful earthquakes are extremely rare in this area. For the first time since 1880, an earthquake of such intensity has been recorded. No tsunami warning has been issued after the earthquake. However, officials have advised people to remain alert in view of the possibility of aftershock.
