Picture of a supermarket in Tehran, the capital of Iran.
I borrowed ration from the local shop. When I went to pay the money the next day, the bill had doubled. This statement of Mehdi, a 52-year-old government employee from Tehran, tells the picture of inflation in Iran. After talking to the people of Tehran, Isfahan, Ahwaz and Mashhad, I found that their voices now reflected more fear of kitchens than bombs.
Mehdi said that inflation has increased so much that now the salary ends in the middle of the month. In many areas, the situation has reached such a level that people are buying bread, ration, and even supermarket packages on EMI.
After the attacks by Israel and America, some Iranians thought that the government would fall, but it did not happen. Now, whether supporters or opponents of the government, everyone is devastated by war, inflation and uncertainty. Since the war, cooking oil has become costlier in the country by 430%, eggs by 345%, rice by 287% and milk by 139%.

Now the opponents said – dialogue is the last way to save the country
Many no longer consider war as a path to change. They have started considering talks as the last means to save the country. Leida, a 44-year-old environmental expert from anti-government Tehran, said she was in favor of talks. He says that Iran lost many lives. Infrastructure broken. War is not in the interest of the country. According to analyst Eli, this is a time of bitter reckoning for the opponents. They have to admit that contrary to expectations this regime survived.
When I returned to the internet, I found out that 12 people in the house had been killed.
The internet was shut down as soon as the war started in Iran. Till the end of May, people remained cut off from the world and from each other. When the internet returned, there was no relief. Stories of broken homes, separated families and terror flooded social media. Among these, the story of Hamed Mirzai is the most painful. He wrote that in March there was an Israeli attack on Resalat Square in Tehran. In this, 12 people including his wife and parents were killed. They came to know about this after the introduction of internet.

Pharmacies are also giving medicines like ration
- The impact of the war has now reached Iran’s production and treatment. The manager of a factory near Mashhad said that production is closed and employees have been sent on leave. The reason is shortage of raw materials.
- The petrochemical industry has been badly affected by Israeli attacks.
- The doctor of Isfahan said that pharmacies are giving medicines like ration.
- The Health Ministry has asked doctors to prescribe only essential medicines due to shortage. Amin Afshar, head of Iran’s Hemophilia Association, said there was no reserve of essential medicines for patients suffering from the bleeding disease. Import of medicines has also become very difficult.

Iran is struggling with inflation even before the war
Thousands of people took to the streets in December 2025 against rising inflation and currency crisis in Iran. Due to this protest, Central Bank chief Mohammad Raza Farzin resigned from his post.
Traders and shopkeepers demonstrated in Saadi Street and Grand Bazaar area of the capital Tehran. Protests against inflation also took place in big cities like Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashhad.
The demonstrations intensified when Iran’s currency Riyal reached a record low against the dollar. Due to this, the prices of food items and everyday items had increased significantly.
According to Iranian government data, the inflation rate in December 2025 was more than 42 percent, while the prices of food items had increased by more than 70 percent.
