11 people have died, while more than 70 have been injured in violent clashes between police and protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). According to news agency Reuters, this violence took place during the ongoing dispute between the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and the regional government. According to the report, the dead include 7 civilians and 4 policemen. At the same time, 23 security personnel and about 50 protesters have been injured. Police have arrested 30 people so far. There is a dispute going on between JAAC and the government in PoK regarding 12 reserved seats of the assembly. These seats are reserved for those refugees who migrated from Jammu and Kashmir to other parts of Pakistan. JAAC is agitating demanding abolition of these seats. JAAC was banned, after which violence broke out. On Sunday, JAAC workers were protesting outside the hospital mortuary in protest against the death of a member of the organization. The member was reportedly killed in police firing. When the police arrived to remove the protesters, the clash started and violence spread. Rawalakot Commissioner Sardar Waheed Khan told Reuters that four policemen and a pedestrian were killed in the firing by protesters. He claimed that in response to this, six protesters were killed in the action of security forces. According to Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the police allege that people associated with JAAC attacked the security personnel with shotguns and other weapons. Police termed the incident as a terrorist act and said that there will be no compromise on law and order and safety of citizens. The regional government banned JAAC under anti-terrorism laws on June 5. Since then, tension in the area is continuously increasing. JAAC was banned 2 days ago. PoK government had banned JAAC on 5th June. Public order and security concerns were cited for imposing the ban. The next day, the police started action against the supporters of the organization and made several arrests. The administration claims that most of the 38 demands of JAAC have already been accepted. Despite this the organization is continuing its movement. The important reason for JAAC’s movement is the 12 reserved seats in the Assembly, which are being demanded to be abolished. Actually, these 12 seats are reserved for those people who had migrated from Jammu and Kashmir to other parts of Pakistan. These people had gone because of the 1947, 1965, 1971 wars or subsequent conflicts. JAAC alleges that due to reserved seats, representation of the local population is reduced and only a few families are getting the benefit.
