All 24 Indian crew members aboard an oil tanker were safely evacuated after a fire broke out on the vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.

CNN News18 had reported that a vessel in the Strait had relayed an SOS signal after it was reportedly hit by a projectile.

According to the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), the incident occurred aboard the tanker while it was operating in waters close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a region that has witnessed heightened tensions and security concerns in recent months.

Authorities said the crew was evacuated as a precautionary measure after the fire was reported onboard. No casualties or injuries were reported among the Indian seafarers.

The DGS confirmed that all 24 crew members are safe and are being provided with necessary assistance. Officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with relevant maritime authorities.

The incident comes at a time when global shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz remain under intense scrutiny due to regional instability and concerns over maritime security.

The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, handling a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any disruption in the area can have major implications for international trade and energy markets.

While details regarding the cause of the fire remain unclear, maritime authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The evacuation also highlights the risks faced by commercial vessels operating in the Gulf region amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. In recent months, several ships have reported attacks, fires and security incidents in and around the Strait of Hormuz, prompting countries and shipping companies to strengthen safety measures.

Indian authorities said they remain in touch with the crew and local agencies to ensure the welfare of the seafarers and to gather further information about the circumstances surrounding the fire.
