Amid reports of growing tensions within the INDIA bloc, the opposition group is gearing up for a crucial meeting in New Delhi on Monday. Scheduled to begin at 12 noon, the gathering comes against the backdrop of recent electoral setbacks, shifting political equations and growing unease among several alliance partners, including the DMK.
Unlike the alliance’s previous gathering in April, when members coordinated their parliamentary strategy on key legislations, this meeting comes after a series of Assembly election defeats that have weakened the Opposition camp.
DMK To Skip Key Opposition Gathering
A major absentee will be the DMK, which has distanced itself from the Congress after the latter aligned with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) following the Tamil Nadu elections. At the same time, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has suffered a major setback in West Bengal, is expected to play a more active role within the alliance.
Sources said several parties are likely to raise concerns about the Congress’s handling of alliance affairs. The CPI(M) has objected to criticism of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during the Kerala election campaign, while the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is unhappy over the Congress’s decision to announce a Rajya Sabha candidate in Jharkhand without broader consultation.
Topics To Dominate The Meet
“There is palpable anger against this government on the ground, but the Opposition is not being able to channel it for elections. That has to be discussed and a roadmap should be drawn out by the bloc at tomorrow’s meeting,” The Indian Express quoted a senior Samajwadi Party leader as saying.
Key issues expected to dominate discussions include the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, delimitation, the proposed One Nation, One Election legislation, examination paper leaks and broader concerns related to the education sector.
Who All Are Attending The Meet?
The meeting at the Constitution Club will be attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, CPI general secretary D Raja, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, NCP’s Supriya Sule and several other opposition leaders. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray is expected to join virtually.
