As JoSAA 2026 counselling approaches, many aspirants are weighing the prestige of legacy institutes against the appeal of securing a seat in newer courses at newer IITs.

Choosing between less popular branches at older IITs and new-age branches at newer IITs is a common dilemma for candidates with a JEE Advanced rank between 1,000 and 5,000. Candidates in this range often find themselves at a crossroads — they may not secure top branches like Computer Science at the older IITs, but they do have a reasonable chance at mid-tier branches such as Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering. Meanwhile, newer IITs often offer highly sought-after branches like Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Data Science at comparatively lower cut-offs, making them an appealing alternative.
Old IITs — such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur — carry decades of legacy, strong alumni networks, global recognition, and well-established infrastructure. Their campus culture, industry exposure, and placement ecosystems are often seen as unmatched.
In contrast, newer IITs — including IIT Hyderabad, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Indore, and IIT Ropar — have rapidly grown in terms of infrastructure, faculty quality, and industry collaboration. Many of them now boast excellent placement records, particularly in tech-driven branches like Computer Science.
How To Select Which Branch?
For students clear about pursuing a career in software, data science, coding, or emerging tech fields, opting for a top branch at a newer IIT can be a strategic decision. It could offer better alignment with industry demand.
However, for those who value institutional prestige, broader exposure, and are open to exploring diverse career paths, an older IIT may provide a more enriching environment.
Another factor to consider is flexibility. Some older IITs offer opportunities for branch change after the first year, though this is highly competitive and not guaranteed.
