A fake note blamed ‘bahu’. A son slaughtered his family for ₹1.5 crore. His accomplice killed him too. But why did the killer spend the night cleaning — with 4 bodies still inside?
Sunny got a cut, wanted more — so he used the same iron rod on Abhishek that killed the family.
For nearly 12 hours, four bodies lay inside a sprawling 8,000-square-foot mansion in the heart of Prayagraj. The alleged killer did not flee. He cleaned bloodstains with detergent and toilet cleaner, poured corrosive liquid on the victims’ faces, covered the bodies with quilts and mattresses, and bathed inside the house. Then, after spending the entire night with the dead, he calmly walked out at dawn, went home and went to sleep.
The victims were businessman Virendra Kumar Vaishya, his wife Anita, daughter Meenakshi and son Abhishek — an entire family, wiped out in one night. The quadruple murder has shocked Uttar Pradesh. And while police claim to have cracked the case within 48 hours, the mystery surrounding the killings refuses to die.
How It Unfolded
According to police, the conspiracy began on May 31 when Abhishek Vaishya allegedly invited his friend Sunny Gupta to the family residence on Hewett Road. The two reportedly spent hours drinking beer and planning what would end with three members of Abhishek’s own family dead.
Police Commissioner Rajeev Krishna’s team says the motive was a toxic combination of financial distress, family disputes and greed. Abhishek, investigators claim, was angry with his father for allegedly disowning him from the family property and refusing to help him clear his debts.
The plan was chillingly simple. When Meenakshi arrived at the family shop around 5 pm, she was allegedly attacked from behind with an iron rod. Her body was dragged upstairs. Shortly after, Virendra Kumar and his wife Anita were also bludgeoned to death.
Post-mortem findings reveal the brutality of the assault. While Meenakshi suffered a fatal fracture to the front of her skull, both parents sustained repeated blows that shattered multiple bones in their heads. Investigators believe the attackers continued striking until they were certain the couple was dead.
The Twist: Killer Kills The Killer
After the murders, jewellery worth around Rs 1.5 crore was allegedly looted from the house. What followed was an even more shocking turn.
The two men allegedly began arguing over the division of the stolen ornaments. Abhishek reportedly offered Sunny only a portion of the loot, promising the rest later. The disagreement turned violent — and Sunny allegedly attacked Abhishek with the same iron rod, killing him inside a shop on the ground floor.
During interrogation, Sunny reportedly told police: “If he could kill his own parents, what guarantee did I have that he wouldn’t betray me?”
How Police Cracked The Case
The investigation that followed resembled a crime thriller. Police scanned footage from nearly 150 CCTV cameras across a two-kilometre radius. One camera captured Sunny entering the Vaishya residence with Abhishek on May 31.
Another recorded him leaving the house alone around 5 am the next morning. Footage later showed him reaching his home in Muthiganj.
When police showed the footage to local shopkeepers, one vendor immediately identified Sunny. Investigators arrested him and recovered jewellery allegedly looted from the Vaishya residence.
The Questions That Remain
Even after the dramatic confession and recovery of valuables, several aspects of the case continue to puzzle investigators and observers alike.
A cardboard note found at the crime scene bore the words: “Bunty, Babli and daughter-in-law killed them.” Police believe Abhishek wrote it to mislead investigators — but the note was not noticed during the initial search, even after forensic experts, dog squads and senior officers had already combed through the house.
Then there is the question of Sunny’s cleaning operation. Why would an accused spend hours scrubbing bloodstains when the bodies themselves remained inside? Investigators say he used floor cleaner, detergent and toilet cleaner to wash away evidence, but the logic behind the effort remains unclear.
Perhaps the biggest puzzle is why Sunny stayed inside the murder house through the night at all. In a densely populated commercial locality, most criminals would attempt to flee immediately. Investigators are still trying to understand how he remained so confident that nobody would discover him.
The motive itself has raised eyebrows. The Vaishya family owned prime real estate estimated to be worth between Rs 10 crore and Rs 15 crore.
Legal experts point out that even if family disputes existed, eliminating an entire family for jewellery valued at around Rs 1.5 crore is difficult to comprehend. Critics also argue that financial distress and debt disputes alone do not fully explain the extraordinary brutality witnessed in this case.
Questions also persist over Sunny’s injured hand. During the police press conference, he was seen wearing a plaster cast. Investigators say he suffered the injury during the murders, but details on its exact nature and when he received medical treatment remain unclear.
Finally, there is the question of a missed alert. Sunny’s brother had reportedly informed local police that he was missing and his phone was switched off — and no action was taken. Two police officers have since been suspended for negligence.
