In a dramatic turn of events that has fundamentally upended West Bengal’s political calculus, expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Ritabrata Banerjee has been officially appointed as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the newly constituted 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The swift transition unfolded rapidly after Banerjee visited the Assembly premises to formally stake his claim before the Speaker. In a calculated show of legislative strength, he asserted the definitive backing of 59 legislators out of the total 80 TMC Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) currently sitting in the House, effectively staging a massive structural rebellion within the party’s legislative wing.
Addressing a heavily attended press conference immediately following his high-profile appointment, the newly minted Leader of the Opposition sought to carefully calibrate his political stance, emphasising that his structural allegiance to the party’s foundational leadership remained intact despite his formal expulsion. Banerjee explicitly declared to the media that Mamata Banerjee remains their true leader, promising that under his stewardship, the breakaway faction will function strictly as a positive, constructive, and highly responsible opposition inside the Assembly.
