TMC Rebellion News LIVE Updates: The political crisis within the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress deepened, with signs of a widening rebellion raising fresh questions about the party’s unity in the state Assembly. A day after being expelled from the TMC, rebel MLA Ritabrata Banerjee was named the new Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly after a group of 59 MLAs, including a majority of Trinamool Congress legislators, submitted a letter to Speaker Rathin Bose backing his candidature.
The move formalises the emergence of a rival bloc within the Trinamool Congress and marks the most significant challenge yet to the party leadership led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ritabrata said the group currently had the support of 58 MLAs who were elected on Trinamool tickets, while two other legislators had also extended support, taking the effective strength of the bloc to 60.
“We are not functioning on the basis of leaders and followers. The MLAs elected on the Trinamool symbol are today the principal opposition force in the Assembly,” he said.
