14 year old Indian-American student Shrey Parikh has won the title of America’s toughest competition ‘Scripps National Spelling Bee’. Shrey Parikh of California won the title by defeating 12 year old Ishan Gupta of New Jersey. Shrey Parikh, a resident of Rancho Cucamonga, California, is an eighth grade student. This was her last year per spelling bee rules, as contestants cannot participate after eighth grade. With the win he received $50,000 in prize money and the prestigious Scripps Cup. This is the fifth consecutive time that an Indian-origin student has won the spelling bee title. No winner was found till the 9th round. This time the competition was so tough that even after 9 rounds the winner could not be decided. Shrey spelled Philepitta and Ishaan correctly spelled Ertebolle, after which the judges conducted a spell-off. In Spell-Off, one has to spell as many words correctly as possible within 90 seconds. Shrey got 32 words out of 35 correct and created a new record. Ishaan wrote 25 words correctly. The spell-off rule was introduced in 2021 to decide a winner. In this, one contestant explains the spelling on the stage, while the other sits in a separate room wearing headphones. Later both are asked the same words in the same order. The ‘National Spelling Bee’ was started in 1925 in Washington DC. Only 9 children took part in the first competition. 11-year-old Frank Neuhauser was the first winner and received a prize of $500 in gold coins. Indian-origin children dominate the spelling bee. Balu Natarajan, the first Indian-origin student to win the Spelling Bee, won the title in 1985. After this Rageshree Ramachandran won in 1988. Since Nupur Lala won in 1999, this has happened only five times when students of Indian origin have not been able to win this trophy. With the victory of Sameer Mishra in the year 2008, the process of Indian-Americans dominating this competition for 12 consecutive years started. This streak was broken in 2021 when the first African American contestant, Jaila Avant-Garde, won the competition. The following year in 2022, Harini Logan won the competition, starting another wave of Indian-Americans winning spelling bees.
