Star Indian shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar was disqualified from the final of the men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the ISSF World Cup, after having reached the championship round after he had secured fifth place in the qualification round with an impressive score of 592.
The 25-year-old was disqualified over an equipment-related technical issue, spotted by ISSF technicians, during the post-competition equipment check conducted before the medal round for the top 10 shooters.
“He has been using the same weapon for the last one year. In the pre-competition equipment control before the start of the tournament, the weapon was cleared. He used the same weapon in qualification.
“Then, in the post-competition check, they said there is a discrepancy in the measurement of the weapon. The Indian contingent appealed to the ISSF jury of appeals and argued that it had passed the pre-competition equipment control. But the ISSF did not agree and the disqualification stood,” a NRAI source said.
Besides denying him a shot at a podium finish in the final, the technical issue could also affect the 25-year-old’s selection for the Asian Games, as scores from this high-profile event carry significant weight.
“We might have to hold a selection trials in that case,” the source said.
Tomar has risen to become one of India’s foremost marksmen in recent years, representing the country at both the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the Paris Games in 2024.
Last year, he captured an individual silver medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions at the ISSF World Championships in Cairo, producing a stellar performance in which he matched his national qualification record of 597/600.
Earlier this year, he successfully retained his continental crown in New Delhi, clinching the Asian Championship title with a brilliant 10.7 on his final shot.
At the most recent World Cup Final in Doha, he added another silver medal to his tally, competing under the revamped format.
