Twisha Sharma Death Case: The Bhopal Court on Friday sent Samarth Singh and his mother, former judge Giribala Singh, to five-day custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged dowry death case of Twisha Sharma.
During the proceedings, the probe agency had sought five days’ remand for Twisha’s mother-in-law and also requested an extension of custody for Samarth, Twisha’s husband. Giribala Singh’s lawyer told the court that they had no objection to the CBI’s plea.
The case took a major turn on Thursday after the CBI arrested Giribala Singh, a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled her anticipatory bail. Just two days after Twisha was found dead at her matrimonial home on May 12, Giribala Singh moved a sessions court in Bhopal seeking anticipatory bail.
CBI officials reached Giribala Singh’s residence at around 10:30 am and questioned her for several hours before formally arresting her at around 5:10 pm.
Samarth was arrested by Bhopal Police on May 23 from the Jabalpur district court premises after remaining absconding for nearly 10 days in the case. Earlier the same day, he had withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and indicated his intention to surrender before a trial court in Bhopal.
Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh are facing grave charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including: Section 80(2), for dowry death; Section 85, Cruelty to a woman by her husband or relatives; Section 3(5), acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention. Additionally, they been charged under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
Investigators are now expected to confront Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh with each other’s statements as the agency attempts to piece together the circumstances surrounding the death of the 33-year-old former model and actor.
According to officials, the agency’s investigation has now entered a critical stage with arrests, forensic analysis and digital evidence being examined simultaneously.
Twisha Sharma Death Case
Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Katara Hills on May 12. Her family has alleged dowry harassment, delay in FIR registration, inconsistencies in the post-mortem examination and possible tampering with evidence.
They further alleged that Twisha’s mother-in-law and former district court judge Giribala Singh also tried to influence the probe.
Alleging a discrepancy in the first post-mortem, Twisha’s parents demanded a second autopsy and refused to conduct her funeral till then.
On May 24, Twisha was finally cremated after her second post-mortem was done by doctors from AIIMS Delhi in Bhopal.
Police registered an FIR under Sections 80(2), 85, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita along with relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, naming Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh.
