A massive fire broke out in a house in Delhi’s Hauz Khas area on the night of 27 May. In this fire, the country’s first Competition Commission of India i.e. CCI Chairman and retired IAS officer Dhanendra Kumar died. He was 80 years old. He died during treatment at AIIMS Trauma Center in Delhi. The fire was caused by a blast in the indoor unit of the AC. Police and fire brigade teams reached the spot, but by then it was too late.
A PCR call came to Hauz Khas police station at around 11.18 pm on Wednesday night. It was told in the call that there was a fire in house number R-15 of Hauz Khas. Police and fire brigade teams immediately reached the spot. The fire was extinguished with the help of two fire tenders.
At that time five people were present in the house. These included family members and household servants. Two people were immediately taken to the hospital. One of them was 80-year-old Dhanendra Kumar, who died due to smoke during treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. His son was also admitted for treatment, but doctors said that his condition was out of danger.
Initial investigation by the police has revealed that the fire was caused by a blast in the indoor unit of the AC. The crime team reached the spot and investigated the entire house. Electrical investigation is still going on. Statements of the people present at the spot have also been recorded. The police have not yet found any indication of any foul play or conspiracy.
Who was Dhanendra Kumar?
Dhanendra Kumar was born in 1946. He started his government job as a 1968 batch IAS officer. In his long career, he worked on many important positions in the Central Government and Haryana Government.
In the Central Government, he worked as Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Ministry of Culture. Apart from this, he was also the Chairman and Managing Director of Rural Electrification Corporation.

In Haryana, he worked as Deputy Commissioner in Karnal and Jind. He was also the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Haryana. He also received the National Citizens Award for his contribution in the development of industrial parks in Haryana. He was also given an honorary doctorate for his excellent work in public affairs.
From November 2005 to January 2009, he was the Executive Director of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan at the World Bank. During this period, he worked on many economic and development projects related to these countries.
In February 2009, he was made the first chairman of CCI and he remained in this post till June 2011. CCI is that government organization which sees that big companies are not establishing their monopoly in the market and that small companies are not being treated unfairly. During his tenure, many important steps were taken towards implementing competition law in India.
He remained active even after retirement. He was the founding chairman of COMPAD. He was also associated with the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs as Principal Advisor and Chief Mentor of the School of Competition Law.
