It was not easy for Ram Charan to carve out his own identity amid the legacy of megastar father Chiranjeevi. The blockbuster success early in his career made him a star, but the flop films pushed him into deep depression and self-doubt. At one time he used to lock himself in the room and even had to apologize to the fans.
The failure of his Bollywood debut and the mental struggle during Covid made his path more difficult. However, Ram Charan bounced back from every setback and became a global star with ‘RRR’. Now his film ‘Peddi’ is about to be released.

Born in a superstar family, but brought up in a normal environment
Ram Charan was born on 27 March 1985 in Chennai (then Madras). He is the son of Telugu cinema megastars Chiranjeevi and Surekha. His family belongs to West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. He has two sisters Sushmita and Sreeja.
Even though Ram Charan was born in a film family, in his childhood he was never allowed to realize that his father was one of the biggest superstars of the country. Ram Charan had told in Sam Fragoso’s Talk Easy podcast that Chiranjeevi never brought the glow of stardom to the house.
Ram Charan had said that his father did not want children to think that they would get everything easily in life. He told that a famous painter had made a big painting of Chiranjeevi, but he had refused to hang it in the house, so that the children would not be affected by the star image.
According to Ram Charan, there was less discussion about films and stardom at home. For this reason, he and his siblings grew up in a normal environment.
Had to hide identity in school
Ram Charan has told in many conversations that he did not want to attract much attention during his school days. He felt uncomfortable when people recognized him as Chiranjeevi’s son. He wanted to live a normal life like other children.
He had said that his father always gave him values related to land and explained the importance of hard work. This was the reason why despite being a star kid, he felt pressure to prove himself.
Interest in studies, business and inclination towards acting.
Ram Charan did his early schooling from Padma Sheshadri Bala Bhavan School, Chennai. He then studied at Lawrence School, Ooty, Hyderabad Public School and St. Mary’s College, Hyderabad.
Initially he had no fixed dream of appearing in films. He was more interested in business, sports and automobiles. His love for cars and sports is old.
In an interview given to Moneycontrol, Ram Charan had told that there was never any pressure at home to appear in films. During his college days, his inclination gradually increased towards acting. After this he decided to take training at Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute in Mumbai.
Ram Charan had told that while learning acting, he started watching his father’s films like a student. He closely understood Chiranjeevi’s dancing, screen presence and dialogue delivery. It was during this time that he realized that acting is not just stardom but also an art.
In April 2024, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Wales, Chennai.
How did you get your first film?
Ram Charan got his first film ‘Chirutha’ (2007) because of his father Chiranjeevi, but for this he had to undergo rigorous preparation and screen test. Director Puri Jagannadh launched him. The film was produced by producer C Ashwini Dutt.
In ABN Telugu show ‘Open Heart with RK’, Ram Charan had told that he was very nervous during the first film. He did not feel comfortable in front of the camera and had to work continuously on acting, dancing and facing the camera.
Even before the release of the film, a huge discussion had started about Ram Charan, because he was Chiranjeevi’s son. The posters and songs of the film had created an atmosphere before its release. Later the film proved to be a box office hit and Ram Charan received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South.

The biggest lesson I learned from my father
Ram Charan had told that after the first film, when he approached his father Chiranjeevi for advice, he clearly said – “You have to create your own identity.” Ram Charan believes that his father’s upbringing, discipline and values taught him have a major contribution in his success.
‘Magadheera’ made superstar overnight
‘Magadheera’, released in 2009, proved to be the biggest turning point in Ram Charan’s career. The film is directed by S.S. Rajamouli did it.
The audience gave tremendous love to Ram Charan’s double role, action and screen presence in the film. It became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of that time and Ram Charan became an overnight superstar.
Took training in horse riding and fencing
For ‘Magadheera’ he took training in horse riding and fencing. He himself did many of the stunts in the film. He got injured several times during the shooting, but did not stop the shooting.
Ram Charan has said many times that Rajamouli gave a new direction to his career. According to him, Rajamouli taught him not only acting but also discipline and detailing.

Difficult times came after success
After ‘Magadheera’, Ram Charan worked in films like ‘Orange’, ‘Racha’, ‘Nayak’, ‘Yevadu’ and ‘Govindudu Andarivadele’. Some of these films were successful, but some did not perform as expected.
Debut in Bollywood with ‘Zanjeer’
In 2013, he made his Bollywood debut with ‘Zanjeer’. It was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s 1973 superhit film ‘Zanjeer’. In this film directed by Apoorva Lakhia, Ram Charan played the character of ‘ACP Vijay Khanna’, which was the role of Amitabh Bachchan in the original film.
In this, Priyanka Chopra was in the female lead. At the same time, Sanjay Dutt was also a part of the film and the role of the villain was played by Prakash Raj.
Made on a budget of Rs 60 crore, the film had earned only Rs 22 crore. After the flop of ‘Zanjeer’, Ram Charan did not work in Hindi films again. However, he was seen doing a cameo in Salman Khan’s film ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’.
He used to go into depression when his films flopped.
According to entertainment portal M9 News, in a 2018 conversation, Ram Charan had admitted that he used to go into depression when his films flopped. He had told that many times he used to lock himself in his room and did not like to meet anyone. During that time his mother Surekha used to take food to the room.
Ram Charan had said that failure forced him to introspect and that taught him to become mentally strong.
Image changed from ‘Dhruv’ and ‘Rangasthalam’
In 2016’s ‘Dhruv’, Ram Charan played the role of an honest IPS officer. His performance in the film was appreciated.
After this, ‘Rangasthalam’, released in 2018, became one of the biggest films of his career. In the film, he played the character of a rural youth named ‘Chitti Babu’.
For this role, Ram Charan went to the villages of Andhra Pradesh and understood the body language, way of speaking and rural accent of the people. He worked so hard on the character that many critics called it the best performance of his career.

Apologized to fans after flop film
‘Vinay Vidheya Rama’, released in 2019, flopped badly at the box office. The film faced criticism. After this, Ram Charan publicly apologized to the fans. He had said that he will choose better films in the future.
It is rare to see stars openly accepting their mistakes like this.
Had a mental breakdown due to Covid
During the promotion of the film ‘Peddi’, Ram Charan told that the Covid-19 lockdown had a deep mental impact on him.
He told that due to the lockdown, the shooting of the film had stopped and he remained alone at home for a long time. His wife Upasana Kamineni was busy with work related to the hospital and patients, while he was feeling isolated at home.
Ram Charan said that he had become so “mentally low” that he was not able to motivate himself even when the shooting resumed. Then he S.S. Called Rajamouli and told him about his condition.
According to Ram Charan, Rajamouli advised him that motivation does not always come from something big. You can control yourself even by setting small goals.
Giving an example, Rajamouli had said that during the lockdown, he used to set small goals like keeping his room as clean as possible. This advice gradually proved helpful in controlling Ram Charan mentally.

Ram Charan and Upasana Kamineni met during their school days and have been together since then.
Who is Ram Charan’s wife Upasana Kamineni?
Ram Charan’s wife Upasana Kamineni is a businesswoman, healthcare entrepreneur and philanthropist. She is associated with the Apollo Hospitals Group and serves as the Vice Chairperson of the Apollo Foundation.
She is also the founder of health and wellness platform UR.Life. During Covid, he worked on many projects related to health services and helping the needy. Upasana is the granddaughter of Prathap C. Reddy, who founded Apollo Hospitals. His mother Shobhana Kamineni has been the Executive Vice President of Apollo Hospitals.
Ram Charan and Upasana were married on 14 June 2012. Both have three children. Cleon Kara Konidela is the elder daughter. Shiva Ram Konidela is the son and Anvira Devi Konidela is the daughter. Shiv Ram and Anvira are twins.
S.S. Rajamouli is considered a lucky director
The biggest hits of Ram Charan’s career, ‘Magadheera’ and ‘RRR’ were directed by S.S. Rajamouli did it. Ram Charan has said many times that Rajamouli gave a new direction to his career and he learned a lot from him. He considers him a lucky director.

‘RRR’, released in 2022, became one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema. In the film, Ram Charan played the role of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju.

In an interview given to Times of India, Ram Charan had told that even after the success of ‘RRR’, he did not leave the house for a week, because he was trying to understand and handle such a huge success.
After the success of ‘RRR’, Ram Charan’s films ‘Acharya’ and ‘Game Changer’ failed at the box office. Ram Charan played the important role of ‘Siddh’ in the film ‘Acharya’. He played the role of a Naxalite youth who fights to protect the forest dwellers and Dharmasthali.
His father and megastar Chiranjeevi played the lead role of ‘Acharya’ in this film. In ‘Game Changer’, Ram Charan played the role of a young and honest administrative officer, who first becomes IPS and later IAS.
What do you think about success and failure?
In an interview given to Dainik Bhaskar, Ram Charan had expressed balanced thinking regarding success and failure. He said, “If a film flops, don’t feel bad and if it becomes a hit, don’t be overly happy. We should remain the same.”
Ram Charan said that he does not do success parties. In his free time he likes to spend time with family and pets.

Also a businessman and producer
Apart from being an actor, Ram Charan is also a successful producer and businessman. He started Konidela Production Company in 2016. Films like ‘Prisoner No. 150’ (2017) and ‘Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy’ were made under this production house.
Ram Charan is the owner of ‘TruJet’ airline, also known as Turbo Megha Airways Pvt. Ltd. This regional airline mainly operates flights between tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Special love for animals and polo
Ram Charan has a special fondness for horses and pet animals. He has several pet dogs and often shares pictures with them on social media. He also has a special interest in polo sports. He has been associated with Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club.
