The Maryam Nawaz government of Pakistan’s Punjab province has currently postponed the decision to restore the old names of streets, squares and areas of Lahore. The names the government wanted to restore included many Hindu and Sikh era names. The government took this step after growing opposition from fundamentalist groups and social media. Some people had given it a religious color by calling it an attempt to bring back Hindu and Sikh identity. Lahore Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Mohammad Ali Ijaz told Pakistani newspaper Dawn that no final decision has been taken yet. The proposal was approved in the meeting of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz. The Lahore Heritage Areas Revival (LHAR) meeting was held on March 16. It was chaired by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was also involved in this. In the same meeting, a proposal to restore many old pre-partition names of Lahore was passed. This plan was created to bring back the historical and cultural identity of Lahore. Later in May, the Maryam Nawaz cabinet also approved this project. Nawaz Sharif said that we should learn from Europe. They do not tamper with historical names. Maryam said that the history of Lahore is its identity. Old names and buildings are proof of this. This entire project was being run under the Lahore Authority for Heritage Revival (LAHR). According to news agency PTI, this is a project worth several billion Pakistani rupees. Fundamentalists made it a religious issue. According to Dawn’s report, some fundamentalist elements and social media vloggers openly opposed Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on this decision. He accused the government of bringing back Hindu and Sikh names and making it a religious issue. According to PTI, the government feared that a major political and social controversy could arise on this issue. For this reason the administration postponed the decision for the time being. Following the protest, LHAR also called a meeting of historians, urban planners, architects and other experts. In this there was discussion on saving the old identity of Lahore and historical names. According to the government statement, most of the people present at the meeting agreed that the historical identity of Lahore is a valuable heritage and should be protected for future generations. Many experts were in favor of restoring the old name. After partition, the names of these areas were changed. After the formation of Pakistan, the names of many areas were changed. Despite this, the old Hindu and British era names of Lahore are still used in people’s memories and everyday conversations. Karachi-based historian Yaqoob Khan Bangash told The Indian Express that after 1947, there was no ideological change in Lahore like that seen in cities like Karachi. According to him, most of the refugees coming to Lahore were from the working class, who associated themselves with the old social identity of the city.
