Open-AI CEO Sam Altman said in Sydney on Tuesday that the rapid growth and use of AI will not cause a jobs apocalypse in the world. He acknowledged that technology has not eliminated as many white collar jobs as he had previously feared. Altman said- I am happy to be proved wrong. Sam Altman, who participated virtually in a conference of Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), shared many important things. In an interview with CBA Chief Executive Matt Komen, Altman said that he was initially concerned about the impact of AI on global employment levels. He said that when ChatGPT was launched in 2022, the technical predictions made by Open-AI were almost proved correct. But, they were quite wrong about its social and economic impacts. Altman said he was very happy to be proven wrong on this count. Entry-level white collar jobs were not affected. Altman said that he thought that entry-level white collar jobs would have ended by now, but in reality that was not the case. Now they are able to better understand why this did not happen. They are grateful for this, because the old fears have now been proven wrong. He further said that people are telling him that you could have saved the world from this fear and anxiety. But at the time I felt it was a real risk that needed to be talked about. He also said that this risk may still emerge in future. Changes continue in companies due to AI, Open-AI can bring IPO. Although Altman did not give any exact figures related to jobs, but he has already expressed the possibility of layoffs in the industry due to the increase of AI. Many of the world’s biggest companies like HSBC, Amazon, Standard Chartered and CBA have already announced that some of their jobs are being replaced by AI. Meanwhile, according to Reuters report, Open-AI is preparing to launch IPO (Initial Public Offering) in the US in the coming weeks. According to an October report, the company could target a valuation of $1 trillion and raise at least $60 billion. It is impossible to change the human part of employment. Altman said that he has realized that even though AI is playing an active role in many industries and jobs, there is a human part of employment that can never be changed. Giving his own example, he said that they were using AI to respond to Slack and email messages, but later they started responding themselves. Understanding the importance of human conversation from his own example, Altman said that when he started getting AI to respond to messages, it used to reply by writing ‘This is Sam’s AI’. It was a great example to them that we really care about people. He said that interacting with people takes up a large part of his time. They cannot even think of handing it over to AI in the future. This realization led him to believe that AI would never be able to replace the human interaction required in jobs. Sam said that in both positive and negative ways it is clear that the jobs picture is going to be very different from what we thought.
