Hundreds of youths took out a “Cockroach Rally” in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai on Sunday to protest against “unemployment” and remarks allegedly made by Supreme Court judge Surya Kant comparing jobless youths to “cockroaches”.

The rally was organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), with participants carrying placards reading “We Want Work, We Want Life, We Want Respect” and “Rally of the Unemployed Cockroaches”.

The march began from the Gandhi Museum premises and ended near the Tamil Annai statue at Thamukkam Grounds, where protesters raised slogans against the Centre over unemployment and rising fuel and commodity prices.

The protest also drew support from followers of the “Cockroach Janata Party”, a satirical social media movement that recently went viral online over issues such as unemployment and inflation.

The controversy erupted after Justice Surya Kant reportedly remarked that unemployed youths were becoming like “cockroaches” and “attacking everyone”, triggering criticism on social media and protests in several places. The page of this party was formed on Instagram and it has gathered massive following.
