SBI employees’ strike postponed: Bank branches will open normally on May 25-26; Consensus reached in the meeting of management and union




The two-day nationwide strike of State Bank of India (SBI) employees proposed on May 25 and 26 has been postponed. This decision was taken after talks between the bank management and union representatives. Now bank branches will function normally on both days. A meeting was held between SBI management and employee representatives on Friday at the Corporate Center in Mumbai. SBI Staff Association (Bengal Circle) secretary Sudeep Dutta told PTI that the meeting with the management was positive and progress has been made on several demands raised by the federation. In view of this, the proposed strike was postponed. Banks will remain closed on May 27-28 due to Bakrid holiday, while on May 27 and 28, due to Bakrid holiday, work in SBI branches will be affected. Actually, the festival of Bakrid will be celebrated on different days in different states of India, for which the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced two-day holidays for Bakrid (Eid-ul-Azha). In most parts of the country, SBI will remain closed on May 27 due to Bakrid, while in some parts there will be a holiday on May 28. There will be an official holiday in the bank circles of Jammu and Kashmir on the occasion of Bakrid on both May 27 and 28. Why did SBI employees want to go on strike? All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF) had announced the strike for their 16 demands. This strike was called to protect the rights of the employees, to decide better working conditions and keeping in mind the interests of the customers. AISBISF is the nationwide representative organization of State Bank of India employees, which negotiates with the management regarding the rights, salaries and working conditions of the employees. Banks were closed on 23-24 May due to weekend holiday. Earlier, banks were closed on 23 May due to the fourth Saturday of the month and on 24 May due to Sunday holiday.
