Mohun Bagan Super Giants have withdrawn seven footballers from the Indian camp ahead of the Unity Cup over pre-FIFA window concerns, saying that if any player travels to play the tournament before the window, the club won’t take any responsibility in case of injuries.

The seven players, who were included in the 28-member India team selected by coach Khalid Jamil for the four-country tournament, were scheduled to depart from Bengaluru to London on Sunday, May 24.

The camp was being held in Bengaluru.

India are all set to face Jamaica on May 27, while Nigeria will take on Zimbabwe on May 26. The winners of the two games will meet in the final on Saturday, May 30, while the losing teams will compete in the third-place playoff.

A Mohun Bagan official made the club’s position clear, saying that the footballers would only be released once the FIFA international window starts on June 1.

“Our stand is very clear, players will be released only from the day the FIFA window starts. We have released the players from our side, but if they travel before that on their own, we will not bear any responsibility if they get injured,” the official said while speaking to PTI.

“The FIFA window starts from June 1. From that date, if a player gets injured, FIFA provides compensation. But if a player suffers an injury before that, there is no protection,” the official added.

The club stated that in the earlier cases involving Subhasish Bose and Ashique Kuruniyan, the federation hadn’t provided any compensation.

The official further stated that while the club wouldn’t prevent players from joining the national team, it wouldn’t assume financial responsibility for any injuries suffered during the tournament, as it falls outside the FIFA window.

“We aren’t stopping the players. Whether they travel or not is their decision. But if they get injured before June 1, Mohun Bagan will not pay anything,” the official said.
