Shubhendu Adhikari held a meeting at Howrah District Magistrate office on Thursday.
The West Bengal government will hand over illegal Bangladeshi migrants directly to the Border Security Force (BSF) instead of the court. This information was given by West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari on Thursday. The new rule has come into effect from May 20.
Shubhendu said that instructions have been issued to the Police Commissioner and Railway Protection Force (RPF) in this regard. According to the new rule, people who are found to be illegal immigrants will not be entitled to get citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

A meeting was held on Wednesday in Kolkata to give land to BSF.
What is CAA, its 3 big things…
CAA is called Citizenship Amendment Act in Hindi. This clears the way for non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to get citizenship.
1. Who will get citizenship: Before December 31, 2024, people of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh after being persecuted on religious grounds, will be given citizenship. Only people from these three countries will be able to apply for citizenship.
2. What is the impact on Indian citizens: CAA has nothing to do with Indian citizens. Indians have the right to citizenship under the Constitution. CAA or any law cannot take it away.
3. How to apply: Application has to be made online. The applicant will have to tell when he came to India. You will be able to apply even if you do not have a passport or other travel documents. Under this, the period of stay in India has been kept more than 5 years. For the rest of the foreigners (Muslims) this period is more than 11 years.
CAA process started in Bengal
- CM Shubhendu had said on Wednesday, ‘Today we have started the legal process. 7 communities covered under CAA and people who came to India till 31 December 2024 will get the benefits of the citizenship law. The police will not be able to take them into custody.
- Those who do not come under the purview of CAA are illegal infiltrators. The state police will arrest them and hand them over to BSF. Along with this, he handed over 27 kilometers of land on the India-Bangladesh border to BSF. Fencing and security structure will be built on it.
- Said in the meeting held in Kolkata to give land to BSF – This is just the beginning. The process of handing over the land will be completed in 2 weeks. In future, wherever land is required for border security, the state government will make it available to BSF.
600 kilometer border still without fencing
The official said that out of the state’s 2200 km long international border, about 1600 km has been fenced, while about 600 km is still without fencing.
India-Bangladesh border is 4,097 kilometers long

India shares a 4,097 km long border with Bangladesh. According to the Union Home Ministry, about 3,240 km of the border has been fenced and about 850 km, including 175 km of inaccessible terrain, is yet to be fenced.
The CM official claimed that out of the proposed 127 km stretch, only about 8 km was fenced during the tenure of Mamata Banerjee’s government.
West Bengal shares about 2,216 km long international border with Bangladesh. This is the longest state border of India-Bangladesh.
