North India is reeling under an intense heatwave, with metropolitan cities recording soaring temperatures. But not all urban areas are heating up equally. Neighbourhoods with higher tree cover are significantly cooler than densely built-up areas with sparse greenery.
Analysis of remote sensing data shows a clear contrast-Land Surface Temperature (LST) is notably lower in areas with abundant vegetation compared to zones dominated by concrete and buildings.
This trend holds across multiple Indian cities, based on analysis of Landsat 8 and 9 satellite data, highlighting the cooling effect of urban green cover.
