From conducting tuition classes to becoming one of the youngest ministers in Tamil Nadu, S Kamali has emerged as one of the breakout political faces of the 2026 Assembly elections. The 28-year-old leader from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made headlines after defeating Union Minister L Murugan in the Avanashi (SC) constituency and later securing a place in Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s cabinet expansion. Kamali has now been assigned the Animal Husbandry Department, marking a remarkable rise for a first-time MLA who entered mainstream politics only recently.

Before entering electoral politics, Kamali reportedly worked as a tuition teacher. Academically, she holds a Master’s degree in English Literature along with a Bachelor of Education degree. She is currently a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Avanashi, a constituency reserved for the Scheduled Caste community in Tiruppur district, representing TVK. Her elevation to the cabinet has also drawn attention because she is among the youngest Dalit women leaders to be inducted into the Tamil Nadu government.

Kamali’s election campaign also became a talking point during the Assembly polls, with reports stating that she campaigned across the constituency while caring for her four-month-old baby. The image of the young candidate balancing motherhood and an intense political campaign resonated strongly with many voters and gained traction on social media during the elections.

Kamali contested the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Avanashi and secured 84,209 votes. She defeated BJP leader Dr L Murugan by a margin of 15,373 votes in what was widely viewed as one of the election’s biggest upsets. The constituency witnessed a high-voltage contest involving 14 candidates from parties including the DMK, BJP, NTK, BSP and several independents. Avanashi also recorded a sharp rise in voter turnout, registering 91.13% polling in 2026 compared to 75.18% in 2021. Voting in the constituency took place on April 23, 2026.

Since taking oath as a minister, Kamali has continued to attract media attention through interviews and public appearances. In recent interactions, she stated that she enjoys the complete backing of Vijay and expressed confidence in handling the pressures and responsibilities of governance. Her rapid rise is now being seen as part of Vijay’s attempt to promote young grassroots leaders and strengthen TVK’s social representation in Tamil Nadu politics.
