The SIT on Saturday presented a chargesheet against former JDU MP Prajwal Revanna and his father HD Revanna, accused in the Karnataka sex scandal case. The two thousand page chargesheet contains statements of about 150 witnesses. The SIT is investigating 4 cases against Prajwal.
In the charge sheet, former Hassan MP Prajwal has been accused of rape and his father and MLA HD Revanna has been accused of sexual harassment. In the charge sheet, evidence has been collected from the crime scene investigation, physical verification, mobile, digital proof and other levels.
The first complaint against the father and son was filed by a woman working at their house. The victim is a relative of Prajwal Revanna’s mother Bhavani. She alleged that she was sexually assaulted several times.
Prajwal contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 as an NDA candidate from Hassan and lost.
What is Karnataka sex scandal?
Prajwal Revanna was accused of sexual harassment by a woman working in his house. On April 26, several pen drives were found in public places in Bengaluru. It was claimed that the pen drives contained 3,000 to 5,000 videos in which Prajwal was seen sexually harassing several women. The faces of the women were also not blurred.
When the matter escalated, the state government formed an SIT. Three FIRs were registered against Prajwal on charges of rape, molestation, blackmailing and threatening. The SIT investigation revealed that Prajwal had sexually harassed more than 50 women. These women ranged from 22 to 61 years of age.
Out of 50 women, about 12 were raped. Sexual favours were obtained from the remaining women by luring them in different ways. Prajwal got some a job as sub-inspector, some as tehsildar and some in the food department.
The women who filed the case had also received threats
- A senior journalist from Bangalore says that out of the three women who have filed FIRs, two have received threats. One woman has got a house under a government scheme, she is being told that her house will be taken back.
- Prajwal had contested the election from Hassan seat this time. He fled the country on 26 April, the day after voting in Hassan. SIT also took the help of International Criminal Police Organization Interpol to bring Prajwal back.
- On 7 May, Interpol issued a Blue Corner notice against Prajwal. After this notice was issued, SIT started getting information related to Prajwal’s location. The team started getting details like which hotel he stayed in, which room he booked, which ATM he used. SIT also got an arrest warrant issued from the court.
- Prajwal returned to India from Germany on May 31. He was arrested by the SIT as soon as he landed at Bengaluru airport. He has been in judicial custody since then.
Who is Prajwal Revanna?
Prajwal is a graduate in mechanical engineering. He has also gone to Australia for studies. He has been with JDS for the last one decade. Revanna also won the Lok Sabha election from Hassan in 2019. However, he lost the Hassan seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He was contesting on a JDU ticket. The BJP had supported him.
Some women had consensual sex and got jobs and money in return
- Dainik Bhaskar’s team reached Hassan on May 6 to report on this case. After three days of investigation, it was found that the women whose videos had gone viral were missing from their homes. We also visited the house of one of the victims.
- The family said that she had gone to Nepal to visit Pashupatinath. They also denied that the video had gone viral. They said that there was no such case. Meanwhile, the neighbours said that the woman has been missing since the video went viral.
- The investigation also revealed that Prajwal had made videos of sexually assaulting people ranging from the police, doctors, JD(S) workers to the maid working in his house.
- Advocate Sunil Kumar of Karnataka High Court says, ‘All this was going on before 2019. Whatever women used to come to Prajwal, he used to make them his victims by luring or intimidating them. Prajwal used to give money to these women as well. He used to shoot videos himself during sexual harassment and then blackmail the women through it. He used to threaten to show the videos to the family members if they told anything to anyone.’
Pornographic videos were released before the Lok Sabha elections
Ahead of the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on 26 April, a large number of pornographic videos surfaced on social media allegedly showing Prajwal sexually assaulting several women. Following this, Karnataka State Women’s Commission chairperson Nagalakshmi Chowdhary demanded an inquiry and wrote to the Congress government, following which the government ordered an investigation.
