World Gymnastics has lifted all restrictions on Russian and Belarusian athletes, allowing them to compete again under national flags and as full teams.

The International Gymnastics Federation has officially reopened the door for Russian and Belarusian athletes.
In a major policy reversal announced on Monday, World Gymnastics lifted the restrictions imposed on athletes from both countries following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The decision was made during the federation’s executive committee meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh over the weekend and takes effect immediately.
What Changes Now?
The move means Russian and Belarusian gymnasts can once again compete under their own national flags and with their national anthems, instead of appearing as neutral athletes.
Even more significantly, athletes from both nations will now be allowed to compete in team events again rather than only as individuals.
World Gymnastics also scrapped previous eligibility conditions that barred athletes who had openly supported the war in Ukraine or were linked to military or security services.
The federation offered no detailed explanation for the decision in its brief statement.
IOC Guidelines Ignored
The decision notably goes further than recent recommendations made by the International Olympic Committee.
Earlier this month, the IOC advised international federations to reinstate Belarusian athletes but maintain restrictions on Russians.
World Gymnastics has now ignored that distinction entirely by allowing both nations back without limitations.
The ruling also effectively clears a pathway for Russian and Belarusian gymnasts to begin qualifying for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Sport Split On Russia’s Return
Gymnastics is not alone in softening its stance.
The International Judo Federation and swimming authorities have also voted in favour of fully reinstating Russian and Belarusian athletes.
Meanwhile, boxing has only partially relaxed restrictions by following IOC recommendations and allowing Belarusians back while continuing limits on Russian competitors.
Other federations remain firmly opposed.
The International Skating Union and World Athletics still continue to ban athletes from both countries entirely.
