Is that a bird? A plane? Is that… Steph Curry?
Nope. Just Victor Wembanyama casually channeling one of the coldest shots in NBA history.
For basketball fans, especially anyone who still remembers Curry’s legendary overtime dagger against the Thunder in 2016, Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals last night felt eerily familiar.
And for a split second inside the Paycom Center, it probably felt like the ghosts of that shot had returned to haunt Oklahoma City all over again.
Wemby’s Steph Curry Moment
Late in the first overtime against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Wembanyama pulled up from near the logo and buried a ridiculous deep three to tie the game and force a second overtime.
The similarities to Curry’s iconic “double bang” moment were impossible to ignore.
Both shots came in overtime. Both were launched from the edge of the logo. Both happened in Oklahoma City. And both left the arena absolutely silent.
The resemblance was uncanny except this time, it wasn’t Curry wearing blue and yellow — it was the Spurs’ 7-foot-4 ‘Alien‘.
Wemby Took Over
And unlike Curry’s famous shot, which won the game outright back in 2016, Wembanyama’s bomb merely set the stage for even more chaos.
Because once the second overtime began, the French superstar completely took over.
Wembanyama scored nine of the San Antonio Spurs’ 14 points in the second OT period and finished with a jaw-dropping stat line of 41 points and 24 rebounds in the Spurs’ gritty 122-115 win over the defending champions.
At just 22 years old, it already felt like one of those defining “arrival” performances that fans will talk about for years.
Shades Of NBA History
Curry’s unforgettable shot in 2016 came during a 46-point masterpiece against Kevin Durant’s Thunder — a game many still consider one of the greatest playoff performances ever.
Durant would eventually leave OKC to join the Warriors that summer, helping build the dynasty that dominated the NBA.
Now, Wembanyama has his own Oklahoma City moment. And the timing made it even sweeter.
Hours after Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received his MVP award, Wemby marched into OKC and stole Game 1 right out from under the Thunder.
