A growing number of Class 12 students across India are raising concerns over the evaluation process adopted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), particularly the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, alleging inconsistencies in marking and unexpected drops in board exam scores.

CBSE too has acknowledged the possibility of “evaluation errors” in the On-Screen Marking (OSM) for the Class 12 results. Speaking to ANI, CBSE Controller of Examinations Sanyam Bhardwaj said, “The CBSE is an institution that works in the best interest of the students, and we operate with complete transparency. We evaluate approximately 1.25 crore answer scripts; there is a possibility that an error may occur somewhere.”

The overall pass percentage this year stands at 85.20 per cent, a drop of 3.19 per cent from last year.

Students have now taken to social media platforms and are demanding either a rollback of the digital evaluation system or the introduction of grace marks to address perceived disparities. Students across Science and Commerce streams, have reported lower marks than expected. Many claim that their board scores are considerably lower than their performance in school-level examinations, pre-boards, and competitive exams such as JEE Main.

The On-Screen Marking system, introduced to digitise the evaluation of answer sheets, involves scanning handwritten answer scripts and evaluating them on computer systems. While the system is intended to improve efficiency and reduce human error, critics argue that technical limitations may be affecting fairness in assessment.

Several student groups argue that even minor marking discrepancies can significantly affect college admissions and eligibility for competitive exams, increasing pressure on students already under academic stress.
