US President Donald Trump said he has postponed a planned military strike on Iran after requests from key Gulf leaders, citing ongoing negotiations that could lead to an agreement aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan urged him to hold off on a military attack against Iran that was allegedly scheduled for the following day.
According to Trump, the Gulf leaders argued that “serious negotiations” were underway and expressed confidence that a deal acceptable to the United States, Middle Eastern countries and other stakeholders could still be reached.
Trump said the proposed agreement would include a commitment ensuring “no nuclear weapons for Iran.”
“Based on my respect for the above-mentioned leaders, I have instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Daniel Caine, and the United States Military, that we will not be doing the scheduled attack of Iran tomorrow,” Trump wrote.
However, he warned that US forces had been ordered to remain ready for a “full, large-scale assault” on short notice if negotiations fail to produce an acceptable outcome.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme and broader instability in West Asia. Trump did not provide details regarding the nature of the alleged military operation or ongoing negotiations.
His comments are likely to draw global attention given the strategic role of Gulf states in regional diplomacy and concerns over the possibility of a wider conflict involving Iran.
