Departments have been divided among the new ministers included in the Yogi cabinet. Bhupendra Chaudhary has got the responsibility of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Department and Manoj Pandey has got the responsibility of Food, Logistics and Civil Supplies Department. Both are cabinet ministers. Ajit Pal Singh has been entrusted with the responsibility of Food Safety and Pharmaceuticals Department. Somendra Tomar has been given the responsibility of Political Pension, Soldier Welfare and Provincial Guard Department. Both will be Ministers of State (Independent Charge) in their respective departments.
Krishna Paswan has been entrusted with the responsibility of Livestock and Dairy Development Department. Kailash Singh Rajput has been given the responsibility of Energy and Additional Energy Sources Department. Surendra Diler has been given the responsibility of Revenue and Hansraj Vishwakarma has been given the responsibility of Small, Micro and Medium Industries. Governor Anandiben Patel had administered the oath to the new ministers at Jan Bhavan.
Effort to reach 2027 through cabinet expansion
6 new ministers in Yogi cabinet- Bhupendra ChaudharyManoj Pandey, Surendra Diler, Kailash Rajupat, Krishna Paswan and Hansraj Vishwakarma had got the place. At the same time, two other ministers Somendr Tomar and Ajit Pal Singh were promoted. Both of them were earlier ministers of state. Through this cabinet expansion, BJP has tried to solve social, caste and regional equations before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections to be held in early 2027. Especially this is being seen as a cut to the ‘PDA’ (Backward, Dalit and Minority) formula of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
This cabinet expansion is being considered as part of BJP’s clear ‘social engineering’ strategy rather than any big political experiment. Out of the 6 new ministers who have been included in the Yogi government, 5 are from Dalit and OBC community, while one minister is from Brahmin community. By giving representation to various communities of Brahmins, Jats, Dalits, Pasis, Valmikis, Lodhs and other backward classes, BJP has tried to give the message of further strengthening its social base before the 2027 assembly elections.
22 upper caste, 25 OBC and 10 Dalit ministers in the cabinet
A total of 52 ministers took oath in the Yogi 2.0 government formed in March 2022. At that time, 21 upper caste, 20 OBC and 8 Dalit leaders were given place in the cabinet. Apart from this, 1 tribal, 1 Muslim and 1 Sikh face were also included in the cabinet. In terms of the number of members of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, there can be a total of 60 ministers including the Chief Minister in the state cabinet. Now after the third and final cabinet expansion, all the 60 ministerial posts of Yogi government have been filled. There are 22 upper caste, 25 OBC and 10 Dalit ministers in the current cabinet. Apart from this, 1 tribal, 1 Muslim and 1 Sikh minister are also included.
How did BJP simplify the equations through new ministers?
BJP has once again tried to maintain the Brahmin balance by making SP’s rebel MLA Manoj Pandey from Unchahar in Rae Bareli district a cabinet minister. After Manoj Pandey became a rebel, SP expelled him from the party and currently he is a member of the Legislative Assembly as an independent MLA. Apart from this, the return of former BJP state president Bhupendra Chaudhary to the cabinet is considered to be an attempt to strengthen the Jat representation in Western UP. He is currently MLC.
Surendra Diler, who hails from the Valmiki community, is being seen as an attempt by the BJP to increase its reach among Dalit voters, while by making Kailash Rajput a minister, the party has tried to strengthen its support among Lodh voters. By inducting Varanasi MLC Hansraj Vishwakarma, BJP has given a clear message of targeting the non-Yadav OBC vote bank in Purvanchal. At the same time, through MLA Krishna Paswan from Fatehpur’s Khaga seat, the party has tried to tap the non-Jatav Dalit vote bank.
