The West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday made it mandatory for schools across the state to sing the national song “Vande Mataram” during morning assembly prayers before the commencement of classes.

The order, issued by the School Education Department, said the directive would come into immediate effect in all schools under the department. It added that the instruction supersedes all previous orders and practices related to school assembly prayers.

The order comes less than a week after Adhikari took oath as the CM of the state on May 9.

The issue of making “Vande Mataram” compulsory in educational institutions has come up in several states and at the national level over the years. Earlier this year, the Union Home Ministry issued fresh guidelines stating that all six stanzas of the national song should be sung during government functions and in schools.

In 2017, the Madras High Court directed schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu to sing or play “Vande Mataram” at least once a week, although the implementation was later left to the discretion of the state government.

The Bihar government had also issued a similar order earlier this year, making the singing of “Vande Mataram” mandatory in government educational institutions.
