A bizarre dispute over a mosquito net at Aligarh Muslim University allegedly escalated into a physical fight between two students after one accused the other of “sending his share of mosquitoes” toward him.
The incident reportedly took place at the university’s SS North Hall hostel, where two students became involved in an argument over the use of a mosquito net inside their shared room. The matter became serious enough that both students submitted written complaints against each other to the university’s Proctor Office, which is now investigating the case.
According to reports, one of the students, a Kashmiri student pursuing graduation, decided to install a mosquito net over his bed to avoid mosquito bites while sleeping. However, his roommate, a student from Ghazipur, allegedly became upset over the arrangement.
The second student reportedly believed that because one side of the room was protected by a mosquito net, the mosquitoes were now coming toward him instead and biting him. This misunderstanding allegedly escalated into an argument and eventually a physical altercation between the two.
The student also reportedly complained that the mosquito net blocked the airflow from the cooler installed in the room.
AMU Professor Naved Ali Khan confirmed the incident and stated that the matter involved students from different academic years sharing the same room. One student is reportedly in BA second year while the other is in BA third year.
Speaking about the issue, the Proctor said it was unfortunate that such a matter led to a fight among students. He explained that the complaints primarily revolved around two concerns, one student alleging that the mosquito net diverted mosquitoes toward him, and another complaint regarding obstruction of cooler airflow.
He added that the university administration has spoken to the students and is trying to resolve the matter peacefully through counselling and discussion. However, he also stated that if the investigation finds anyone took the law into their own hands, appropriate action would be taken.
